According to The Ankler’s Jeff Sneider, Disney is gearing up to reveal the first footage ofAvatar 2ahead ofDoctor Strange 2’s May 6th theatrical release. With a film ashighly anticipated as theDoctor Strangesequeland now that Disney owns the rights to theAvatarfranchise, Disney feels that sharing a glimpse of another 2022 blockbuster will no doubt be a huge plus.Doctor Strange 2is expected to draw a large audience due in part to rumors that it will feature a wide array of Marvel characters from other universes, so Disney could be banking on using that platform to get audiences reacquainted with theAvatarfranchise, which was previously owned by 20th Century Fox.
While it’s unclear what will be shown in the first teaser, if theAvatar 2set photos and stunning concept artare indication, it will be something truly magical and mind-blowing. On top of that, Saldaña shared in a recent interview that she was able to watch 20 minutes of the upcoming film. While she was slim on the details, she did say that what she saw moved her to tears.
FollowingAvatar’s groundbreaking release back in 2009, a film that would go on to win big at many award ceremonies and set numerous box office records (Avatarstill ranks as the highest-grossing film of all time when adjusted for inflation), it was obvious that a sequel would be made shortly after. But Cameron had other plans. Due to the lack of certain technologies in order to film breathtaking sequences involving performance capture scenes underwater, a feat that has never been accomplished before in the history of cinema,Avatarsequels being delayedevery year was a recurring trend.
But now the wait is over, as Cameron and the whole cast and crew spent countless hours filming not onlyAvatar 2, but a3rdfilm simultaneously as well.Avatar 2’scast will also include CCH Pounder’s Mo’at (Neytiri’s mother), Joel David Moore’s Dr. Norm Spellman, Matt Gerald’s Corporal Lyle Wainfleet, and Giovanni Ribisi’s Parker Selfridge. Sigourney Weaver, who portrayed Dr. Grace Augustine in the first film, will play an entirely new character, whileKate Winslet will also be reuniting with Cameronas a new cast addition.
Avatar 2is finally set to release in theaters on December 16th, 2022.
