Activision confirmed thatCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’s DMZ mode will no longer receive content updates. Many of the mode’s aspects were converted intoModern Warfare 3’s Zombies mode.

DMZ wasCall of Duty’s first effort at breaking into the popularextraction genre, which sees players load into a large map and attempt to extract as much high-value loot as possible, without being eliminated by AI or other players. While DMZ fans hoped the mode would continue to receive updates going intoModern Warfare 3, they didn’t have their hopes up following the announcement ofModern Warfare 3’s Zombies mode, which is also an extraction mode.

Activision said thatModern Warfare 2’s DMZ mode will remain fully playable in theCall of DutyHQ app, but will no longer receive updates for the foreseeable future. While this comes as bad news for DMZ fans, Activision’s comments toward the end of its DMZ discussion may offer hope that the mode will return in future games. TheCall of Dutypublisher explained, “Going forward, development teams will continue to evolve these dynamic open world experiences into the future. We look forward to sharing updates when ready.”

It sounds like Activision isn’t shutting the door on futureCall of Dutyextraction modes, followingModern Warfare 3’s Zombiesmode. It’s also possible thatModern Warfare 3’s Zombies mode will split into different versions sometime in the future, possibly with one Zombies mode allowing player vs. player action like DMZ does, but that’s just speculation at this time. The extraction genre has proved to be extremely popular with FPS fans, and has even begun to rival the battle royale genre, so it seems highly unlikely thatCall of Dutywon’t eventually return to featuring a PvP extraction mode.Modern Warfare 2’s DMZ was labeled as a beta, so fans may expect to see a full release of DMZ with Infinity Ward’s nextCall of Dutytitle. However, Infinity Ward’s next title is about two years out.

Fans might be hoping for a DMZ mode in next year’sCall of Duty, which is developed by Treyarch. Unfortunately, Treyarch has historically been focused on Zombies for its third mode, so it seems unlikely that the studio will take on Infinity Ward’s popular extraction mode. The DMZ mode proved to be popular because, similar toModern Warfare 3’s Zombies mode, it offers a slower-paced, less aggressive version ofCall of Duty. The game’s 6v6 multiplayer mode is often hectic and competitive, which cuts out a large chunk of gamers who prefer a more relaxed approach.DMZ also heavily emphasizes co-op playwith teammates, which made for a great fit for groups of friends looking for an easygoing FPS mode.

Although DMZ fans will probably be disappointed to hear this news, it’s unlikely that their favorite mode is gone forever. In the meantime, they can enjoyModern Warfare 3’s Zombies mode and its plethora of camo challengesto complete, or another extraction shooter likeHunt: Showdown.
