A representative from Infinity Ward has clarified the company’s stance on loot boxes forCall of Duty: Modern Warfare. This comes after a leak revealed that there may be aSupply Drop system inModern Warfarethat were reported as weapon loot boxes for the upcoming title.
Many modernCall of Dutytitles have had microtransactions and loot boxes, but most of the time, these were only for cosmetic items. The recent leak forCall of Duty: Modern Warfareimplied that these new loot boxes would include new weapons, which would incentivize more players to purchase the loot boxes and possibly ruin the game balance. Thankfully, it appears that leak is untrue.

After a number of leaks for the upcoming title, including howModern Warfare’smultiplayer perksare going to work, a representative from Activision took to Reddit to help clear the air. In a new thread called “Current Events,” the art director from Infinity Ward explains:
“There continues to be misinformed and incorrect info being pushed about Modern Warfare. What I can say right now is that we are definitely NOT working on any kind of supply drop or loot box system. Also, functional stuff is unlocked through GAMEPLAY.”
He goes on to say that more information will be released later in the week.
While theCall of Duty: Modern Warfareart director didn’t go on to confirm or deny any of the other leaks, this does put the other leaks provided by VG Sources into question. However, the leaks were provided via a datamineCall of Duty: Modern Warfare, so it’s possible that Infinity Ward and Activision originally planned on including loot boxes, but ultimately scrapped the idea. Whatever the case was, loot boxes don’t appear as though they’ll be in the final game.
Modern Warfarehas gotten a lot of publicity recently, and not all of it is good. A YouTuber recently reported that theCall of Duty: Modern Warfarebeta netcodewas really bad, although this could change with the final release. The title also lost a lot of pre-orders when it was announced that theModern WarfareSurvival Mode would be PS4 exclusive for a year.
There is some good publicity though, as some of the leaks revealed fan-favorite maps and exciting new perks that may be coming to the newCall of Dutytitle. Players will find out Warfarelater this week.
