Chicory: A Colorful Taleis one of the biggest surprises of 2021. It was one of the excellentindie gamesreleased this past year that stood apart from the crowd, earning any number of Game of the Year awards across many categories. It seems that the development team behindChicoryenjoyed creating the game as much as players enjoyed playing it. Game director Greg Lobanov has confirmed that a new game is in development fromChicory’s team, offering up the game’s first teaser.
Lobanov’s teaser is small, but sweet. It’s exactly whatChicoryfans will appreciate. In a short post on Twitter, Lobanov confirms that he’s working with theChicoryteam on something new and with it shares an animated image. The image features a character endlessly running. It’s a two-legged creature with a cute nose, big round eyes, large fox-like ears, a fuzzy body, and a short blunt-ended tail. It’s a cat-kangaroo, a fox-flamingo, or some kind of Frankensteined creature formed from the pieces of other animals. One thing is clear – it’s very cute.

Lobanov doesn’t offer any other information about their huggable running creature. It could be the protagonist of theChicoryteam’s new game, perhaps hinting at a2D platformerof some kind, or it could be a side-character, NPC, or even an enemy. In that regard, it’s a very good teaser, because it doesn’t really offer any insight into what the new game will really be.
What’s undeniable about the creature, however, is that it has all of the charm thatChicoryplayers would expect from the game’s development team. While there’s a darker element toChicory, the vast majority of characters in the game have an approachable and friendly disposition to them. It makes it easy forChicoryplayersto care about the characters involved in the game’s story. This new creature is already creating fans who can’t wait to get to know this fuzzy buddy better.
Chicoryisn’t Lobanov’s only game. He previously worked on many small projects, with the two most notable and recent projects being musical platformerWandersongand procedurally-generated roguelike deck builderCoin Crypt. Suffice to say, Lobanov has a diverse range of experience across game genres.
With theChicoryteam, however,Lobanov’s work has become something really special.Chicoryis of a quality and purpose that stood out in 2021. Hopefully, this new project from theChicoryteam is only better. Lobanov says that he hopes to share details about the new game in 2022, so fans can look forward to that over the next year.
