Destiny 2raiders have discovered a secret puzzle and valuable reward within the Root of Nightmares raid. Root of Nightmares just launched a day ago, but it has already been completed by many ofDestiny 2’s most capable raiding teams. The first raid of theLightfallexpansion has high expectations placed on it, given Bungie’s track record of quality raiding experiences. Whether it lives up to those expectations is yet to be seen, asDestiny 2players continue to discover secrets Bungie has hidden throughout the Root of Nightmares.
The Root of Nightmares is the first raid ofLightfalland plays deeply into the themes and story ofDestiny 2’s ongoing conflict between Light and Darkness. The raid is set on one of The Witness' dark Pyramids, strangely-shaped spaceships which can have terrifying foes within. At the start ofLightfall, the Traveler attacks one such ship with a ray of light, transforming the ship into something uniquely beautiful and full of mysteries.

Destiny 2raider and content creator Skarrow9 has uncovered one of Root of Darkness' most rewarding mysteries. In a video shared on YouTube, the content creator has detailed their discovery and how otherDestiny 2players can complete this puzzle themselves. The reward for completing the puzzle is a bonus “red” chest uponcompletion of Root of Nightmares. Within the chest is a guaranteed raid weapon with a red border, allowing players to extract its plan for future crafting.
The puzzle starts at the beginning of the raid, where a trio of orbs serves as a key for later puzzle elements. In the video, the key is shown to be dark, light, and dark again. After each raid encounter,Destiny 2playerscan then find a secret room with both a light and dark orb in them. Players will need to follow the key to know the order of connecting these orbs. The room after the first encounter is a dark orb, a light orb after the second encounter, and a dark orb after the third.
Each time the players connect the correct orb in these secret rooms, they’ll receive the message, “Your actions take root….” And if all three orbs are connected correctly an additional message reading, “A great harvest awaits…” is shown. Players can then complete Root of Nightmares for their reward. Choosing the incorrect orb will lead to the message, “Your spoils suffer irreparable damage,” and require players to go to orbit to reset.
Altogether, it’s a puzzle that’s not particularly flummoxing but also isn’t so obvious as to be free loot. It doesn’t necessarily have any exciting gameplay within it, but it can be done quickly enough to not be tedious.Destiny 2players will likely appreciate the change of tempo betweenRoot of Nightmares encounters, as well as the reward. Altogether, it’s just one more detail that should make Root of Nightmares that much better of a raid.
