Diablo 4fans have always considered Strongholds as an exciting feature full of untapped potential, which made a player come up with an ingenious way to tie them together with the current gameplay loop. As it stands, Helltides andNightmare Dungeons inDiablo 4represent the bulk of its endgame, and though the game has had its critics, the reward structure has been widely praised by the community. Where most players take issue is in its lack of variety. Nightmare Dungeons may be fun for a while, but they lack the chaotic unpredictability of Greater Rifts fromDiablo 3.
Many fans would say that theendgame inDiablo 4is good on paper, but it needs a bit more to offer in terms of pure content. A quicker respawn on World Bosses, better Nightmare Dungeon layouts, and repeatable Strongholds have been some of the game’s most requested features. Though it remains to be seen if and when Blizzard decides to expand onDiablo 4’s endgame content structure, the willingness of the developers to increase rewards in Nightmare Dungeons and Helltides implies that they’re more than willing to listen to the community.

The suggestion, submitted by TheCruelHand on theDiablo 4subreddit, is simple: instead of being permanent,Strongholds inDiablo 4could be subjected to a weekly reset. In addition to becoming repeatable, Strongholds would change their modifiers similarly to how Nightmare Dungeons have different affixes, and even the bosses could be fully randomized. Given that it doesn’t take long to clear a Stronghold, it wouldn’t hamperDiablo 4players too much in restoring every Stronghold’s waypoint.
Another genius idea forDiablo 4’s Strongholds came from Kyriolex in the same thread, where they suggested that players could also (optionally) tackle Nightmare Strongholds by activating Nightmare Mode through Stronghold Sigils. Though some fans are worried that the novelty would wear off quick, having the ability to break up the current monotony at endgame would be appreciated. The grind to obtain a perfect set for gear for anyDiablo 4class is far longer than it used to be inDiablo 3, and having to run the same content over and over again is hardly anyone’s idea of fun.
On the flip side, turning Strongholds into a weekly grind might backfire, as it could easily introduce a bothersome grind for players to deal with every Thursday. Perhaps the best solution instead would be to place the reset button into the players' own hands. Ultimately,Season of the Malignant inDiablo 4will introduce Malignant Tunnels to the game, and though they may not be the repeatable Strongholds that players have been asking for, they should still hopefully add new depth toDiablo 4’s endgame.
Diablo 4is available for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
