Some newly uncovered shots from the set ofDoctor Whohave finally revealed the hyped-up return of David Tennant as the 10th Doctor, along with Catherine Tate as the beloved companion Donna Noble. But the set photos also show another new character interacting with Tennant, which could lead to some interesting speculation regarding where the show might go from here.

As these things go, a simple leak of images fromDoctor Who’s set has quickly spread like wildfire, with fans sharing them far and wide. It’s not difficult to see where this excitement is coming from, though. The pictures back up the recent news that Tennant and Tate will return toDoctor Whoas their respective fan-favorite characters, giving fans of the show a lot to chew on. But aside from those 2, another separately-shared image seems to show off a character who may or may not be the new face of an old favorite.

While a number of snaps show off Tennant, Tate, and even Donna’s grandfather and fellow popular companion Wilfred (played once again by Bernard Cribbins), there’s also another one floating around that appears to show Tennant next to newcomer Yasmin Finney. This has led many fans to speculate that Tennant is, in fact, playing the “alternate” version of the 10th Doctor who stayed behind in a separate timeline with Rose Tyler (originally played by Billie Piper). But that theory could also have some interesting implications regarding Finney’s character.

Recent news confirmed thattrans actress Finney would join the cast ofDoctor Whoas Rose, but the details were apparently kept intentionally ambiguous by returning showrunner Russell T. Davies. “How can there be another Rose?” he teased in the announcement. It seemed as though she would be playing either a different version of Rose (like Tennant’s parallel 10th Doctor) or a different character entirely who just so happens to share the name. But with this clear shot of the 2 of them together, it seems likely that there will be some kind of connection.

Tennant and Tate quickly endeared themselves to audiences when they joinedDoctor Whofairly early into its 2005 revival. The same can be said for Cribbins, whose charming Wilfred served as yet another lovable companion to The Doctor on numerous adventures. After his tearful departure, punctuated by his heartbreaking utterance of “I don’t want to go,” Tennant did eventually return as part of the show’s 50th anniversary event “The Day of the Doctor.” But this time looks like it might be bigger than a simple special, not to mention he’s joined by some friends now.

It looks like next year will offer tons of hype-worthy content forDoctor Whofans, from the 60th anniversary celebration to the excitingcasting of Ncuti Gatwa as the next Doctor. So here’s hoping the excitement level doesn’t get too intense, else The Doctor might have to sort this planet out a bit.
