The following contains spoilers forEverything Everywhere All at Once.
Everything Everywhere All at Oncehas been enjoying the fruits of its surprising but well-earned popularity after making a substantial mark at the box office upon its debut earlier this year. But as the new most successful entry in A24’s repertoire, it also seems to be inspiring plenty of talk of a potential sequel. Always leave the audience wanting more, right?
Well, according to the film’s directors, the idea to leave audiences wanting more may actually be the plan. In a recent interview with Edgar Wright, directors Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert seemed to hint at the idea that they were actually bouncing around ideas fora sequel toEverything Everywhere All at Once. But more recent comments from the duo seem to indicate that the original quotes probably shouldn’t have been taken at face value.

“Actually, if we ever were to do a sequel to this movie,” Kwan said in the original interview, “it would be about Evelyn getting radicalized [by social media]. And then Joy would have to go out and save her mom.” That concept caught many people off-guard, particularly sinceEverything Everywhere All at Onceendedin a pretty definitive and satisfying way. So the idea of a sequel likely wasn’t on a lot of people’s minds before that. The thing is, it turns out it was barely on Kwan and Scheinert’s minds either.
In a response to the original article, Kwan and Scheinert posted on their shared Twitter account that their comments from the interview shouldn’t be taken as gospel. “Not true at all. Don’t even remember making this joke,” they explained. “Must have been back in March when the idea of a sequel was especially comically far-fetched to us.” That does clear some things up, especially since the original interview was posted in late June, while the article referenced by the Daniels only just went up on July 2nd.
As what many consider to be the best “multiverse” movie, even compared to the various Marvel Studios offerings,Everything Everywhere All at OncesawMichelle Yeoh’s Evelyn harnessing the skillsof alternate versions of herself to save the world. One big twist involved her daughter Joy (Stephanie Hsu), revealed as the big bad using similar methods to thwart Evelyn along the way. With the help of her husband Waymond (Ke Huy Quan), Evelyn has to not only save reality itself but bring her daughter back from the brink and salvage their relationship.
A sequel like the one suggested in the interview would seemingly flip that dynamic on its head, with Joy having to come to her mother’s rescue rather than vice versa. Sounds like just the kind ofemotional trip that Yeoh would be great at. But if that ever happens, it probably won’t be any time soon according to the Daniels. Still, it’s nice to think about, because this is one movie that deserves all the exposure it can get.
Everything Everywhere All at Onceis now playing in theaters and available to purchase on Prime Video.
