Thiscollection of 3DMariogamesgave many fans their first official taste of being able to take classic games likeSuper Mario SunshineandGalaxyon the go. However, the desire for a portable version ofSuper Mario Galaxyis not a new one. For years, fans have spread rumors and fake leaks online of a potential or canceled port of the game to Nintendo DS, but now, some fans are taking matters into their own hands to create aSuper Mario Galaxydemake on DS.

Over on a YouTube channel simply titled “Jesse,” a group of dedicated fans has begun posting impressive videos of theirSuper Mario Galaxy DSproject. Made entirely “for fun” by individuals known in the community as Jelle, Gericom, Stomatol, and Ermii, the homebrew project is not simply a mod forSuper Mario 64 DS, but is instead being built entirely from the ground up.
While Super Mario Galaxy DS is a neat concept to begin with, the demake project is also entirely playable on actual Nintendo DS hardware, but at the moment, the creators have not officially released a way for others to download and play the project. The impressive demake looks almost exactly how fans might expect it to on DS hardware, graphics, audio, and all, and despite some missing sound effects here and there, it is convincing. Although fans are unable to download and play the Super Mario Galaxy DS demake on their own, it may be for the best, as Nintendo is known forstriking down such fan projects.
Just a few months after theinitial launch ofSuper Mario Galaxyon the Wii back in 2007, Nintendo fan Pablo Belmonte fooled thousands of fans with a Super Mario Galaxy DS hoax of his own. The video was created as a Design Studies class project focused on creating a viral video. The convincing hoax featured off-screen recordings of what appeared to be a trailer showingSuper Mario Galaxyrunning on a DS, and needless to say, the video went viral in just a matter of time.
Now thatSuper Mario Galaxy DSis becoming somewhat of a reality, it is certainly interesting to see something like this come full-circle. But now, coming fresh off ofSuper Mario’s 35th anniversaryand the release ofSuper Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury, fans patiently wait to see what is in store next for the video game icon.
