As a series,Diablohas existed for 26 years since it started in 1997. In that timeframe, Blizzard has only released four mainline games and onespinoff. Granted, there were paid expansions for the first three games and Blizzard did support those titles overall with free updates too.

Keeping games alive is what Blizzard does best, and they should be applauded for it. The aforementioned spinoff,Diablo Immortal, is a phone version of the same top-top looter RPG experience. Aren’t there anyother genres that would work well for theDiabloseriesnow thatDiablo 4is out? The simple answer is yes, so here are some pitches on where the series could go next.

7An RTS Like WarCraft

Blizzard made a name for itself thanks tothe RTS genre. They made both theWarCraftseries and theStarCraftseries. It is amazing that they never tried to turnDiablointo an RTS, although that may have happened behind the scenes.

The idea seems simple enough. Players could choose to play as a Lord of Hell or a Lord of Heaven. They could build bases in Sanctuary where the battlefield between Heaven and Hell is typically fought. It’s hard to say where it could take place in the timeline, but perhaps it should be set as a prequel to the whole series.

6A Strategy RPG Like Final Fantasy Tactics

If Blizzard is done with RTS games, then a strategy RPG would be a good second option.Final Fantasy Tacticsis the best example of how to make agood strategy RPG. The story is dark, there is a class system via Jobs, and the combat mechanics are second to none.

The game could also be a prequel like the setup for the RTS game. It should focus on a group of human warriors who are trying to fend off both Heaven and Hell. These warriors could change into classic classes like Rogues and Sorcerers and multi-class too akin toFinal Fantasy Tactics.

5A Third-Person Action RPG Like Dynasty Warriors

One of the complaints from fans of this series is that the camera is too far away.Diablo 4is the best-looking game in the series, but it’s hard to appreciate the art when the camera is pulled so far back. A fix to add in zoomed angles would be appreciated, but that is beside the point.

It would also be cool if Blizzard contacted Koei Tecmo to make a third-person action game akin toDynasty Warriorsto really get behind the camera. Koei Tecmo has made a ton of spinoffs to theDynasty Warriorsfranchise with other companies at this point.Hyrule WarriorsandGundam Warriorscome to mind. SinceDiablois all about hacking and slashing giant mobs of enemies, it would be fitting to seeDiablo Warriorssomeday.

4A First-Person Shooter Like DOOM

DOOMis all about going to Hell to fight demons.Diablois also about fighting demons in Hell. How has Blizzard not madea first-person shooteryet or tried to collaborate withDOOM? It seems like a match made in Heaven although there are understandable limitations.

The world ofDiablodoes not have guns, so that could be a barrier but the spinoff does not need them anyway. Demon Hunters would be a good choice to fixate this spinoff on. They could use crossbows and magic to fend off demons just as easily.

3A Stealth Game Like Deus Ex

There area lot of stealth gamesout there but very few of them have RPG mechanics. The biggest exception that comes to mind isDeus Ex. Imagine aDiablogame wherein an Assassin or Rogue could go on spy missions.

Characters could level up their skills with a vast amount of choices that could help bypass puzzles in a myriad of ways. There would have to be dialogue choices as well. Perhaps the game could center on three factions: Humanity, Heaven, and Hell.

2A Roguelike Like Hades

Diablodeals with Hell as doesHadesalthough they cover two different pantheons of beliefs.Diablofollows more of a Christian outlook on religion whereasHadesis about Greek gods. Zagreus is the son of Hades, and he definitely wants to get out of the Underworld.

Zagreus has a lot in common withLilith fromDiablo4as they both dislike their fathers. The gameplay of Hades is a roguelike and that could work well forDiablo. It would be cool to see Lilith try to escape her father as well from another point in history.

1A Simulation Game Like Moonlighter

Moonlighteris another roguelike, so it may seem like a cheat to include two examples from the genre in here. However, a roguelike is only half the battle asMoonlighteris also a simulation game. Players control a shopkeeper who ventures into dungeons at night to then sell his wares to adventurers during the day.

Imagine playing aDiablogame with the exact same concept. This series is all about loot, so it would fit well. Alternatively, this spinoff could be more of a straight simulation shopkeeper game but a roguelike combo just fits so well.
