A fan recently revealed what the classic Game Boy titlesPokemon RedandPokemon Bluewould look like in high definition. Thisamazing 2.5D creationis enough to make some fans pine for a remake of these foundational Nintendo titles.
Many kids who grew up in the 1990s will have fond memories of the originalPokemon RedandPokemon Blue. The games were released on the Nintendo Game Boy in Japan in 1996, with the North American launch coming in 1998. They are considered to be among the best of the best games released for the Game Boy and Game Boy Color, with some going so far as to rank them among the greatest games of all time. They are also among the best-selling of all time, with well over 47.5 million units sold between the Red, Blue, Green, and Yellow versions.

These classic titles had a massive impact on Nintendo, gaming, and culture in general. Nintendo later re-released both games for the 3DS Virtual Console, making it playable on the Wii and Wii U. However, the publisher has yet to release aSwitch port forPokemon RedandBlue, and an official remake seems unlikely. However, that hasn’t stopped YouTuber and 3D artist Dott from imagining what the games might look like in high definition. He presented their creation in a set of videos depicting whatRedandBlue’s Pallet Town and Vermillion City would look like in modern 2.5D pixel art.
Made in Unreal Engine 5, Dott’s version ofPokemon RedandPokemon Blueresembles the visual style of games like Square Enix’sOctopath Travelerseries. Characters, trees, and certain other scenery objects take the form of highly detailed pixel art sprites. Meanwhile, buildings and rocks are 3D modeled with flat but detailed textures making them resemble cardboard constructions. These objects are arranged on a slanted plane, adding to the impression of looking at an animated diorama. Careful use of light and shadow also helps to enhance the atmosphere.
Unfortunately, Dott’s HDrecreation ofPokemon RedandPokemon Blueis not playable. Instead, it is simply a fun little exploration of what such a remake could look like. Still, if the YouTube comments are anything to go by, it seems like this is what manyPokemonfans would like to see from the series. Hopefully, Nintendo notices this and uses this art style in futurePokemongames or even potential remakes of earlier titles.
