Spider-Manhouses many of the great comic-book villains, with Doctor Octopus, or Doc Ock, being one of the standouts. An image of theSpider-Manvillain without his tentacles has taken over the internet, with multiple gaming communities sharing funny edits of the floating man.

Part of Doc Ock’s modern popularity is due to his portrayal by Alfred Molina in theSpider-Manfilms. The actor reprises his role in the recently released andcontinually dominantSpider-Man: No Way Home, playing the same Doc Okc from the originalSpider-Man 2but brought into the world of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Doc Ock also has seen attention due to his appearance in Marvel’sSpider-Manby Insomniac Games, playing a much more subdued version of the character, whose transformation can slowly be followed across the game’s roughly 20-hour runtime. Regardless of the medium, Doc Ock is highly recognizable due to his distinctive goggles and metallic tentacles.

What started as a simple edit of removing Doc Ock’s tentacles has snowballed into a collection of increasingly zany gaming memes on Twitter. From the like count and number of referrals back to it, it appears the meme started on January 10 when user RawbertBeef first commented on a shot fromNo Way Home, where Doc Ock is just floating in the air without his tentacles, and how more menacing he is because of it. Quickly after, RawbertBeef followed this up with another post, not alterring the image, with the caption, “Minecraftcreative mode,” channeling images of flying blankly through hundreds of tiles. The tweet is currently sitting at over 20k Retweets and nearly 180k Likes.

With that post the flood gates opened and now there are so many great memes out there. For starters, one by purplepaperboy simply adds the Nintendo Wii closed-fist cursor to Doc Ock’s forehead, making it look like he is a Mii being picked up on the Mii Channel.

Anoter by XenokoYT gives Doc Ock the iconic black angel wing so prominently used bySephiroth fromFinal Fantasy 7, with the caption, “I will never be a memory, Peter,” quoting his final words fromAdvent Children.

Lastly is one along the same lines by iowahawkfan21 who put the ominous Dark Figure fromKingdom Heartsbehind Doc Ock, stating, “Open your heart Peter.”

It is always such a treat when a highly versatile meme like this one surfaces, as it provides an opportunity for the gaming community to flex its creativity. Furthermore, it is incredible how the simple addition of a wing and a quote toDoc Ockcan totally change the meaning of the image. RawbertBeef thought the original image of theSpider-Manvillain made him look menacing, but almost like a challenge, gamers were able to make him look hilarious.
