Even with the PlayStation 5 anticipated to be only a few months away from launch, Sony is making sure the PlayStation 4 player base has plenty to occupy their time for now. In the past month, Sony has released two highly touted first party exclusives withThe Last of Us 2as well asGhost of Tsushima. The latter has proven to beanother mega hit for developer Sucker Punch, who took a risk developing a brand new IP.
Early reports indicate thatGhost of Tsushimais on pace to become Sony’s fastest-selling new IP, a title previously held byHorizon: Zero Dawn. A major reason whyGhosthas become a new contender to the sales throne is due to how fast the game has sold in Japan. In a Tweet from the PlayStation Japan account, the company revealed that the game has exceeded sales expectations and stores have begun to completely sell out.

Thankfully, Sony is currently attempting to address the shortage by increasing production, although fans can still pick up a digital copy from the PlayStation Store. No doubt, the rush of sales were certainly helped along by the widely read and respected video game magazine, Famitsu. Thepublication awarded the game a perfect score, making it the third western developed game to earn one alongsideThe Elder Scrolls V: SkyrimandGrand Theft Auto V.
Naturally, another driving force for its popularity is that the game takes place on Tsushima Island, a part of the Japanese archipelago in the north. Players are transported back to the first invasion by the Mongols in 1274. While thegame is based on that historical event, Sucker Punch adds in a bit of fictional elements to tell a compelling story as well as give life to protagonist Jin Saksai.
The main draw for many players, however, is the open world itself. Sucker Punch has pulled out all the stops to create a vibrant and rich landscape highlighted by varying colors, flowing animations, and impressive particle effects. The beauty in the game’s visuals pairs extremely well with the robust Photo Mode editor Sucker Punch has created, giving fans plenty of reasons to spend more time than originally expected playing around with the filters, effects, and the many other options available. Fans have even started toproduce some incredible shots, something which will likely continue to be posted through social media.
Ghost of Tsushimais available now exclusively for PS4.
