TheGuardians of the Galaxy’s most eco-friendly member is not a tree of many words. In fact, Groot’s vocabulary is famously limited to saying, “I am Groot,” over and over again for only his closest friends to understand. Yet his adolescent version still has a few messages he wants translated crystal clear for others, as James Gunn recently confirmed.
The leafy humanoid alien is one of theGuardians of the Galaxy’smost beloved characters, with his adult, child, and teenage antics being a staple of the MCU, both despite and because of his unique language. It takes time and effort to understand Groot, unless one happens to take the same classes Thor did back in Asgard, and even more so to attainthe relationship he has with Rocket Raccoon.

Nevertheless, the video game-addicted and brooding Teen Groot has taken time to pick up the basics of some other languages. Naturally, that involves learning the curse words first, as Gunn confirmed with a tweet leaving no doubt that Adolescent Groot is not having it. To confirm this, Gunn quoted a fan’s tweet containing the MCU’s Skrull alphabet and a scene fromGuardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2whereChris Pratt’s Star-Lordis telling Teen Groot to clean his room, with a clear scribble of what the sign next to his door says.
Yes, as a matter of fact, this is the MCU’s first F-bomb and it’s hardly unsurprising that thePeacemakerdirector was the one to include such a clever easter egg that’s taken fans so long to fully piece out. Groot and the rest of the Guardians' appeared inThor: Love and Thunder, and there were plenty of comedic touches from the ragtag bunch of superheroes to keep fans amused untilGuardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3releases. Keep in mind Groot is starring inhis own animated shorts calledI Am Grootstarting August 10.
Gunn has come out to explain the complicated nature of Groot as a lifeform, saying the Adult Groot from the firstGuardiansmovie did in fact perish and that Baby Groot is technically his son. On top of that, the director once clarified that Groot’s last line inAvengers: Infinity Waris calling Rocket Raccoon “Dad," so as it turns out every single one of those “I am Groot” lines packs a ton of nuance.
Taika Waititi’sThor: Love and Thunderdid not go light in humor, and seeing the Guardians back together was just another reason to enjoy the film. Then again, there’s always Square Enix’sGuardians of the Galaxytoo.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3is scheduled to release in theaters on May 24, 2025.
