WithHogwarts Legacyout, both old and newHarry Potterfans alike, find themselves reading the books and watching the movies either for the first time or for the millionth. But no matter how many times someone reads the stories, some things never change, and one of them is the sadness over certain characters' deaths.

The Harry Potter series, especially starting from book 4 and onwards, has some really disturbing, unfair, and utterly devastating deaths which are not only reserved for secondary characters but some of the main ones too. The even more annoying thing is that becausethe books are so well written, these deaths make sense, but that doesn’t make them hurt any less.
7Sirius Black
Bellatrix Lestrange is one of the most hated characters in the whole Harry Potter series, and it’s not only for her ruthless personality and blind devotion to Voldemort. One of the reasons that Bellatrix is so hated is that she was the murderer of a much-beloved character, Sirius Black.
Many fans were turning the pages back and forth trying to see where Sirius gets back to the living world or were hoping that he was going to resurrect somehow, but they, along with Harry, were disappointed. Bellatrix kills Sirius with a spell and his death was as abrupt as it was unexpected.

6Severus Snape
Even though a lot will argue that Snape’s death in the books was presented somewhat “lighter” than it was in the movies, one thing is for certain: It was a death that broke the hearts of all those fans who understoodthe dark side and Slytherinsa bit more than others.

What made Snape’s death even more heartbreaking washis undying love for Lily, Harry’s mother. It is carved in the minds of all the readers with one simple but oh, so powerful word: “Always”. He might have given the fans a lot of anger and many trust issues, but his plan was always simple: do whatever he can do for his one true and lost love.
5Dobby
Dobby’s deathis so much more devastatingin the books than it is in the movies and one of the reasons for that is that in the books Dobby appears - and helps Harry - a lot more. After Harry had freed him from the Malfoys by giving him a sock, Dobby becomes a free elf and starts to devote himself to Potter with a love that’s both touching and heroic.

He comes to Harry’s and his friends' rescue when they are trapped and tortured in the Malfoys’s house. Not only that is more than any other elf would do, but it is so much more touching because he goes directly against his former masters and tries to harm Bellatrix by bringing down a chandelier on her. Unfortunately, before they teleport somewhere safe, Bellatrix threw a knife that got Dobby. Harry, in tears, is the one that holds him while he leaves his last breath.
4Fred Weasley
Fred’s death, even though it happened at a part of the book where many beloved characters perished, is another one of those deaths that fans kept turning the pages back and forth to understand how it is possible that he died and is not coming back.Fred is one of the Weasley twins, with the other one being George, and brother to Ron, Percy, Charlie, and Ginny.
In the movie, his death is not as pronounced as it is in the books, maybe due to the chaos of the big fighting scene in the Battle Of Hogwarts. In the book though, Fred is killed by an explosion, leaving everyone angry for revenge but also completely devastated.

3Albus Dumbledore
Dumbledore’s death came as a shock to both the readers and the characters of the book, if for nothing else, then for the stability and wisdomthat he -almost- alwayshad shown. It came also asa shock to the readersthat were rooting for Snape being the good guy since he was the one that killed him in the Astronomy Tower.

The scene is built with a lot of tension since Harry watches everything while in hiding and is frozen by a spell from Dumbledore, so he doesn’t intervene. While initially, it’s Draco that disarms Dumbledore and looks like it’s going to kill him, he can’t pull it through, and it’s Snape who deals the last blow. As it turns out, it was for a good reason, but the readers and Harry will learn that later.
2Cedric Diggory
Even though he doesn’t play as a major role as some of the other characters, Cendric’s death is a particularly nasty one because first, he is a character that is very likable, and second, because it’s one of the first major deaths in the books and the readers are left a bit stunned - especially with how “easy” a good character is killed off.
After Harry and Cedric manage to finish the Triwizard’s Tournament together, they decide toboth take the cup at the same time. Turns out that the cup was a Portkey, and they are both transferred into a graveyard and straight into Voldemort’s trap. Wormtail kills Cedric with a spell under Voldemort’s orders straight away.

1Remus Lupin & Nymphadora Tonks
These two lovebirds deserve to be mentioned together because apart from beingone of the best couples in the series, they died practically together, in the Battle Of Hogwarts. These two had an amazing love story that the readers only got glimpses of, but it was enough to know that their love was strong, and they even had a chance to marry and have a baby.
In the Battle Of Hogwarts, Tonks was initially not meant to be a part of, but she couldn’t stand knowing that Remus would be there fighting without her, so she joined. The readers know that they were killed by Death Eaters, but J.K. Rowling said in an interview that Lupin was killed by Antonin Dolohov and Nymphadora by Bellatrix Lestrange.
