Summary
Despite making video game adaptations for a good few decades now, it still feels as thoughDC’s gaming output is just scratching the surface of what its universe has to offer. While Batman is one of the most bankable superheroes and his general moveset is a natural fit for the realm of video games, DC has relied on the hero a little too much over the years, and it’s about timeDClooked to the wealth of other heroes and stories under its belt for some new video game experiences. Thankfully, DC might be about to do just that.
Back in January 2023, James Gunn announced his plans for the rebooted DC cinematic universe. These plans included a new Batman movie that would focus on his relationship with Damian Wayne, some new TV shows based on somelesser-known DC characters like the Creature Commandos, and of course, a brand new Superman movie that’s set to hit theaters next Summer. It’s this latter project that could end up paving the way for a DC video game that fans have wanted forever.

It’s The Perfect Time for a Superman Origin Game
DC’s New Strategy Paves the Way for a Superman Origin Game
Since before his DCU roadmap was even announced, James Gunn has been very open about the future of DC’s video games, and how they’ll fit into his new cinematic universe. On several occasions, Gunn has confirmed that some future DC video games will be canon to this new universe, though there likely won’t be any direct movie tie-ins like the classic superhero games of old likeSpider-Man 2orX-Men Origins: Wolverine. But this does pave the way for some interesting opportunities. For instance, future DC games could fill in some gaps in the timeline left by the movies, and a Superman origin story would be an amazing place to start.
The first proper entry inJames Gunn’s new DCU,Superman– formerly known asSuperman: Legacy– is slated to release next July, and while it’ll be the first movie to depict David Corenswet’s new version of the titular hero, it apparently won’t be an origin story. While fans have seen Superman’s origin story plenty of times on the silver screen, its removal does leave a sizable gap in this version of the hero’s journey, one that a video game could fill.
Superman’s Origin Story Would Be Perfectly Suited for a Video Game Adaptation
For decades now, fans have wanted a fully-fledged, big-budget solo Superman game, and making an origin story tie-in for the upcoming movie is the perfect opportunity to fulfill those wishes. There’s always been a lot of discourse surrounding the concept of asolo Superman game, with many believing it to be too difficult to pull off properly due to Superman’s rather overpowered skillset, but an origin story is a great, natural way to get around that.
With players taking control ofClark Kent at a young age, they’d begin the game with only the hero’s most basic powers. As the game progresses, the player could unlock new abilities as Clark himself learns them, thus giving players a natural difficulty curve that mirrors Superman’s coming-of-age journey. This way, a Superman game could still offer plenty of challenging encounters while making in-universe sense, as Superman is still getting used to his new powers.
