Unfortunately, the Crimson Demon’s Explosion expert is not the only one who has cottoned on to Ckomusuke’s true identity.
The Mad Exploder has allegedly become quite active as of late and is connected to this suspicious kitty; according to Megumin, that is! Arnes (aka Anis) rocks up at the most convenient of times and boldly claims ownership of the beloved cat. To everybody’s surprise, Megumin co-operates, as this may be her only ticket out of the Crimson Demon Villiage.

Chomusuke’s Secret Identity
As it turns out, viewers have already gotten a glimpse of Chomusuke’s inner being during the opening scene of the very first episode. The Goddess of Sloth and Violence had previously been split into two, and the enormous beastthreatening young Megumin’s lifeis the violent aspect of Wolbach’s essence. After some sensation Explosion Magic skills, the dragon-like creature has subsequently been sealed inside a petite feline form.
Chomusuke is much more of a troublemaker in the manga and is always getting up to mischief, but thankfully, in both cases, Wolbach’s Violence has been tamed. Chomusuke is evidently perfectly content with her kitty lifestyle and refuses to leave with Arnes. The powerful demonic visitor may be able to release the beast within; however, this appears to have very little appeal to Chomusuke, who desperately clings to Megumin.

On a side note: this also explains why Chomusuke has never been very fond of Aqua inKonoSuba: God’s Blessing on This Wonderful World! The Axis Cult took Wolbach’s fate into their own hands and declared her to be evil for no apparent reason, which is essentially why the Crimson Demons keep the Evil God imprisoned in the first place. So, in a roundabout way, Aqua is to blame for Wolbach’s predicament.
Arnes' Achilles' Heel
Attentive viewers may have picked up that Arnes also appears in the debut episode ofAn Explosion on This Wonderful World!, as the knowledgeable traveler who visits Hyoizaburoo’s store. The stranger gravitates towards a gilded bracelet and makes an impulsive purchase, which costs her dearly in the end. Unbeknownst to her, this cuff bangle is responsible for Arnes' bout of bad luck, whereby “worthless” and “trashy” men are drawn to the demon like moths to a flame.

Arnes couldn’t have stopped in a more inconvenient location, as the Crimson Demon Village issimply overflowing with NEETsand undesirable egotists who have nothing better to do than aggravate her. If she had only known that Hyoizaburoo’s wares have a reputation for being defective in some way, she might’ve been reunited with her precious Wolbach. And who knows what might’ve come from that unholy reunion! This whole cursed bracelet sub-plot is an anime-only addition to the storyline, while the manga’s version of events paints the Crimson Demons in a more heroic light, fighting off the fiend with sheer brute force (the magical kind, of course.)
Megumin is always on the ball and uses this uninvited guest to her advantage, as a useful scapegoat forher Explosion Magic escapades.Megumin isn’t keen on accepting responsibility for the daily eruptions, and while it was easy enough to frame The Mad Exploder as the guilty party and it’s always best to add a face to the name. This gorgeous horned demon just so happens to be the perfect fit!

Chomusuke’s Grim Fate
It’s safe to say that the viewers at home have bonded with Chomusuke as much as Yunyun andthe other Crimson Demon girlshave. Seeing Megumin being so coldhearted towards the fuzzy feline is like a punch to the gut. How can fans admire her after shamelessly throwing her familiar under the bus for financial gain? Well, this isn’t the first time Megumin readily abandons her minion, as she often treats Chomusuke like cannon fodder; especially if it means saving her own skin.
On the other hand, at least Megumin hasn’t tried to eat the critter as Komekko constantly suggests, and she ensures that the kitty will be cared for in her absence. For all she knows, a powerful demon familiar might be advantageous along her travels, but there is no guaranteeing the cat’s safety. One could argue that leaving her companion behind isa selfless act on Megumin’s part.Even if she was willing to sell Chomusuke, she made her decision with a heavy heart. Megumin loves her fur baby, in her own warped way!
Furthermore, in Chapter 7 of the manga, Megumin is even willing to “sell her body” to earn enough money to teleport to Alcanretia, which proves the lengths she is willing to take to achieve her goals. Okay sure, it’s just potion testing, not prostitution, but the same sentiment applies! Those potions could have seriously adverse effects, after all. Moreover, it’s not like selling Chomusuke is the first plan of action, the poor girl tried tirelessly to earn enough coin honorably and probably saw no other way out of her predicament. Luckily, Megumin got to have her cakeandeat it!
