WhileRustdoes have its fair share of animal NPCs, they are largely vicious and would rather attack a player on sight than fetch a stick. There are somevideo games which have very notable animal companions, and given how difficult Facepunch Studios' open world title is, it perhaps wouldn’t be too bad an idea to allow players to have in their employ a fairy sidekick. Well, there is a possibility that this could happen in a future update, which should please a lot of fans.
According to a recent video from YouTuber SHADOWFRAX, there’s a chance that the studio behindRustmay indeed incorporate a pet system into the game. The information comes from the Facepunch commits page, and depicts a new category that mentions “pets.” There’s currently not a lot of information on there at the time of writing, but there are a few comments and posts about something being developed or tweaked by some of the team, a number of which are blurred out, presumably to not give too much away at this stage.

On top of that, there’s also been a leak which may relate to a railway system. Last year,Rustdid update with an underground railway network, but, according to the YouTube video, this latest development could be related to an above ground one. Custom maps do have these already, but speculations from the host suggest that the studio could officially add an above ground series of railway lines, and that it would possibly be procedurally generated. However, they do go on to say that such an implementation would be difficult as a rail network would need to take into account the generated terrain of the world.
Of course, there’s very little to go on at this stage, especially with the railway idea. However, it is interesting that there is a new section of the commits page that specifically talks about pets, so there may be some element of truth to the theory.Rustrecently had its Arctic update, which saw the game be given, as the name implies, a colder aesthetic, as well as polar bears, so the game is always being updated.
Most who have played the game, extensively or otherwise, know just how punishing it is, such that the studiointroduced a “softcore” mode toRustlast year to make it less harsh. That aside, it’s generally an enjoyable experience once players get to grips with the overall mechanics and survival gameplay. Having said that, the opportunity to have a pet wolf to aid in adventures would not go amiss for many.
