The trailer takes place on a fictional game show set, which also serves asan in-game Gunfight map. Featuring a fake game show host called Alexei Popanovski alongside intentionally cheesy dialogue and graphics, the live action trailer perfectly captures the 1980s setting ofCall of Duty: Black Ops Cold War. The game show is also given a hilarious name that references the originalBlack Opscampaign, as “What Do The Numbers Mean?” is a clear callback to protagonist Alex Mason and his brainwashing.
With weird game show prizes like tanks being awarded to the trailer’s contestants, the goofy teaser was met with a positive reaction in the comments section. Some players said that the trailer looks like an in-universeGrand Theft Autoshow, with others believing this is what people watch before enteringCall of Duty: Warzone’s gulag. With moments of 2v2 gameplay mixed into the lighthearted Gunfight Game Show trailer, the video successfully hypes up both the mode and the map.
It will be interested to see how Gunfight evolves inCall of Duty: Black Ops Cold War. One of the most popular modes inCall of Duty: Modern Warfare, Infinity Ward eventually addeda Gunfight Tournament systemto the game, spicing up matches and making players more invested in securing a win. While Season 1 ofCall of Duty: Black Ops Cold Waronly reintroduces the popular game mode, it will be interesting to see what spins Treyarch puts on the gameplay going forward.
