The latest update forMarvel Snaphas reduced one of its most terrifying deck types to atoms with nerfs to a few key cards. In addition to a round of rebalancing to numerous cards,Marvel Snaphas also reworked the Token Shop, added the new card Negasonic Teenage Warhead, and implemented a series drop for several sought-after cards. While there are many reasons for players to celebrate these changes, the meta had been turned completely on its head by reducing the threat of Shuri and Thanos decks that have been top dog throughout this current season, creating a power vacuum for new combos to fill in the gaps.

Shuri decks have been a terror for manyMarvel Snapplayers during the ongoing Days of Future Past season due to her incredible ability to double the power of the next card played. This strategy allowed players to fill their decks with high-powered cards like Thanos who could take advantage of Shuri’s ability with little other than an opposingShang-Chito stand in their way. With many of the cards that paired best with Shuri getting nerfed in this update, the presence of these decks will likely be on the decline.

How Marvel Snap Nerfed Some of its Best Combos

Although Shuri herself did not change in this update, several of the best cards to combo with her receive pretty substantial changes. The biggest one was toMarvel Snap’s Thanos, who was the most common card paired with Shuri thanks to his high Power and ability to shuffle the six Infinity Stones into the player’s deck at the start of a match. Thanos has had his Power dropped from 11 to 10, and the Space Stone has had its ability changed to move a card to the same location as it rather than previously being able to move one card from its location somewhere else.

In addition to Thanos, two other cards commonly used with Shuri have also been nerfed; Red Skull has had his Power reduced from 15 to 13, as well as his ability changed to give opposing cards at his location +1 Power instead of +2, and She-Hulk has had her Power reduced from 10 to 9. Developer Second Dinner has acknowledged the high usage numbers for these cards, stating it wanted to drop their Power levels while still keeping them above the 9-Power threshold for Shang-Chi’s ability. These changes should make Shuri andThanos decksless appealing to play and less of a headache to play against.

Besides the rebalance to these cards, a few others were also tweaked to help with the ways they interact with various situations. Aero has had her ability refined so that she only moves the last card an opponent played to her location rather than all cards the opponent played that turn. Cards likeMystique, Absorbing Man, and Taskmaster that can acquire attributes from other cards can now only do so if their target card is still on the field. In an effort to further reduce the usage of Thanos, Quinjet has also had its ability to reduce the Cost of cards that didn’t start in a player’s deck by 1 adjusted so that cards can’t drop below 1 Cost from this ability.

The final changes made were to Morbius and Knull, cards that both benefit from others being discarded or destroyed. Their abilities used to activate even while in a player’s deck or hand, but now Morbius must be on the field to gain a Power boost when a card is discarded, and Knull must be either in the player’s hand or on the field to gain a boost when a card is destroyed. While it’s not clear yet what new cards will dominate the meta after these changes, it seems like the days ofShuri and Thanosdomination might finally be over.
