Mass Effect: Legendary Editionis out next week, remastering the originalMass Effecttrilogy of games for current consoles with various improvements to bring them up to modern standards. Many of the improvements inMass Effect: Legendary Editionseem aimed at the firstMass Effectgame in particular, but as it turns out, one of the big changes is actually going to be completely optional.

As revealed in an interview with PC Gamer,Mass Effect: Legendary Editionlets players use the old-school Mako controls if they want. Everyone else can use therevamped Mako controls, which were implemented since many people were not impressed with the way the vehicle controlled in the originalMass Effectgame. The Mako was infamous in the originalMass Effectfor how poorly it controlled, so it stands to reason that most gamers are going to stick with the new controls.

Regardless, it’s nice to see BioWare acknowledge that some fans may want a more authenticMass Effectexperience, even if it means putting up with less than ideal Mako controls. And it’s always nice to have options, so anyone that doesn’t want to put up with the old controls can simply stick to the new version and vice versa.

There are some fans who want BioWare to take the Mako controls inMass Effect: Legendary Editioneven further, however. In fact, a “petition” was started by fans that asked BioWare tomakeMass Effect’s Mako even harder to control, as a way to pay proper homage to the original game. BioWare doesn’t appear to have added any kind of functionality like that, so fans will have to make do with the original controls.

Besides improving the Mako controls,Mass Effect: Legendary Editionmakes a number of other important changes to the originalMass Effectgame. The graphics have gotten a major overhaul to better match what people expect from games in 2021, plus a new universal character creator has been added so fans can havemore consistency with Commander Shepard’s appearancefrom one game to the next.

There are otherMass Effect 1improvements inMass Effect: Legendary Edition, though fans should be able to expect improvements in bothMass Effect 2and3as well. If things go as planned,Mass Effect: Legendary Editionshould be the definitive way to experience the games, and hopefully it’s enough to tide fans over while they wait for morenews onMass Effect 4.
