Ages are one of the most important improvements made byMillenniato thetraditional 4X formulaof theCivilizationseries. Unlike most of the mechanical implementations of eras or periods that the genre has produced through the years,Millenniatreats its ages as something that decides the direction the entire game world will take for the foreseeable future, and they apply to every player in the game.
While most advancements in the game apply to individual factions, called “nations” inMillennia, ages work differently, and that includes the Age of Monuments. Starting from the fourth time period, the first player to reach a new age also gets to choose which version of that age to enact. Every player is then locked into that same age once they reach the same time period. Broadly speaking, there are three kinds of age: the normal age, variant crisis ages (like theAge of Plague), and many less dramatic variant ages. The Age of Monuments is part of this last group.

How To Reach The Age Of Monuments
Reaching the Age of Monuments, a variant of the Age of Kings, in the fourth time period of the game isn’t as difficult as most other variant eras. For one, players will need to research the standard three technologies from the previous era. They must also come from the standard Iron Age instead of any variant age.
Finally, researching the Age of Monuments, in particular, requires having three civic monuments already built. Implicitly, this also requires toestablish some regions, at least three of them, since each region can only have one civic monument. But civic monuments are also a good investment for this era and an improvement on the previously available dolmen, both improving influence and, therefore, region size. Controlling three cities is also fairly simple at this point in the game.

What To Do During The Age Of Monuments
The Age of Monuments isn’t as big a variant as the previous variant age, the Age of Heroes. There are no quests to send troops on, and the bonus technology is not quite as unique. Still, there are some areas where this age changes significantly from the normal Age of Kings.
For starters, players can look forward to building a super monument foundation. This doesn’t sound especially exciting, even if it’s still a pretty good investment in itself. Most importantly, it’s the first step towards crafting a super monument, which can grant massive bonuses to some of the main domains. Those monuments can be as varied as the Temple Bazaar – whichimproves engineering, diplomacy, and wealth – and the warfare and government-focused Palace Fortress.

Players who manage to enter the Age of Monuments should not neglect the standard improvements of the fourth age.Religion is a big aspect of the game, and this is the time to begin to invest in it, either by founding one or adapting the religion of a neighbor. This age also makes many luxury goods harvestable, too, and at just about the time when cities start getting big enough to need them.
