Mojang has been hard at work adding new mobs intoMinecraftwith every update. With the mob vote also a thing, the community has been able to chime into which new mob should be introduced into the game next. The glow squid is one of the winners ofMinecraft’smob vote.

Although the glow squid may seem like just a regular reskin of the original squid, it does have a few features that make it much more unique and useful than the regular squid (which, by the way, needs a huge revamp among other passive mobs). Here’s what players need to know aboutMinecraft’sglow squid.
6The Glow Squid Has Many Aquatic Enemies
The life of a glow squid is far from easy. Unlike so many other mobs in the game, the glow squid has to deal with a few natural predators that hunt it down at first sight. Guardians and Elder Guardians seem to dislike it with a passion and will attack immediately.
The same thing goesfor the adorable axolotl, which was added into the game roughly around the same time as the glow squid itself. These cute predators will also hunt down glow squids viciously, which can be good if the player can’t reach the glow squid on their own.

5Bedrock Edition Has Baby Glow Squids
A ton of mobs inMinecrafthave their own baby versions. Pigs, cows, sheep, and the like all come with an adorable baby variant, which makes sense since they can be bred. The same can’t be said exactly for glow squids, which surprisingly have a baby version of themin the Bedrock Edition. This, despite there being no feature to breed them.

Bedrock gamers might randomly notice a few of these baby glow squids popping up in ideal spawning locations. Their spawning is actually completely random, so unfortunately there’s no real way to guarantee players will get a baby glow squid.
4Glow Squids Enjoy Complete Darkness
The main feature in glow squids that sets them apart from their regular squid counterparts is how they spawn. Unlike normal squids that can spawn almost anywhere where water is involved, glow squids require a specific light level: complete darkness.
This means that glow squids are a little tougher for players to find. That said, with the abundance of massive caves with underground lakes and ponds, it’s entirely possible for glow squids to spawn in abundance in these locations. The best way to find them is to simply go out and explorethe brand-new gigantic caves ofMinecraft.

3The Glow Squid’s Ink Has A Different Color
Another difference that players might notice in comparison to regular squids is the ink that glow squids spit when scared and under attack from their enemies. Normal squids will always spit out a cloud of dark ink, but the color of the glow squid’s ink cloud leans more towards something turquoise.
Of course, there are other major differences too, like the little glow particles around glow squids and their texture. It’s a shame that Mojang didn’t implement a glow into these glow squids, which would have allowed them to illuminate the area directly around them. It definitely would have madefor more atmospheric caves.

When it comes to passive mobs, most players are probablymore than familiar with the lead. This item is a necessity if players wish to control and tame certain mobs inMinecrafteasily, as it allows them to lasso enemies and drag them around.

Leads can surprisingly also be used on glow squids, against all logic. Despite the mob not being tameable, players can still use leads to manipulate them, should the need arise. Leads can be crafted with four pieces of string and one slimeball, which are dropped by slimes.
1Glow Squids Drop Glow Ink Sacs
So, what’s the main purpose of glow squids? Their primary advantage is in their mob drop, which unfortunately means killing them. Glow squids will drop a glow ink sac, which can be used in a variety of crafting recipes to make some interesting, glowy objects. This includes a glowingitem frame, which will emit a bit of light while displaying an item, even in complete darkness.
Not just that, players can use these glowing ink sacs to make the text on signs glow as well. This is a game-changer for players who like to build in dark locations and a huge boon with the new caves that are massive and a bit difficult to fully light up. No need to light up signs with torches anymore provided the player can find some glow squids to farm for glow ink sacs.

Minecraftis available on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, Android, iOS, and many other devices.
