Despite many gamers' reservations on how well the firstSonicmovie would perform, it turned out to do so well that two sequels and a spin-off series were greenlit shortly after.Sonic the Hedgehog 2, as the movie is fittingly called, has thrilled fans to bits with its trailers as it put a huge focus on Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles. However,Knuckles' inclusionhas left fans a bit nervous as to what focus Tails would get, but a recent interview insists thatSonic 2will get its love in the film.
The firstSonicmovie took a more familiar approach to a CGI-and-live action film, with the blue blur being from another world and left alone on Earth. Due to the movie’s realistic setting, it didn’t have too much time to properly referenceSonictitles apart from small Easter eggs for fans to find.Sonic the Hedgehog 2, however, will take notes directly from the games.

In an interview with IGN, Director Jeff Fowler was given a question about whether fans could look forward to seeingfamiliar locations fromSonic 2and3’s levels. His answer was a simple “Oh, yeah, all kinds,” before stating that the Tornado was already an iconicSonic 2reference, and trailers have already revealed that it plays a role in the movie.
Fowler goes on to say that duringSonic the Hedgehog 2’sdevelopment, the filmmakers got incredibly excited when thinking just what to include fromSonic 1and its sequel specifically. The aim was to create a “real cinematic version of the stuff that fans loved fromSonic 1andSonic 2,” which most definitely sounds promising.
For series loyalists, this may put them at ease when it comes toTails' role in the movie. While fans of the two-tailed fox may still need to wait for the movie to release, there may be other surprises in the movie that make the film enjoyable. Jeff Fowler goes on to state in IGN’s interview that those working onSonic the Hedgehog 2ran into “a great problem that there are so many great Easter eggs to incorporate,” saying that the movie is “chock-full of them.”
The trailers currently out have showcased plenty of Easter eggs already, from the Master Emerald and Sonic and Knuckles' clash fromSonic 3’sopening to how the opening sequence of Sonic jumping off a tall skyscraper at night reminded many fans ofSonic Adventure’sfirst cutscene. Eagle-eyed fans can even see GUN logosfromSonic Adventure 2during the trailers. It seems that with what’s already been seen, along with what Fowler has said, fans can look forward to a movie full of the very things they love from theSonicfranchise.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2releases in theaters on April 8th.
