If there is one company that has become synonymous with “video games” over the years, it very well may be Nintendo. The 131-year-old Japanese company has brought countless fans joy and entertainment for generations, from the8-bit Nintendo Entertainment Systemto the hybrid handheld-home console Nintendo Switch. And while the company has certainly had its ups and downs, one market it has always dominated was handheld gaming.

Since the release of the original Game Boy in 1989, Nintendo has released countless classic handheld games, from titles likePokemon GoldandSilvertoTheLegend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening, but many fans argue that where Nintendo’s handheld games shined the most was with theGame Boy Advance. Now, fans have taken to Twitter to wish the handheld system a happy birthday on its monumental 20th anniversary.

Popular YouTuber TmarTn shared a Game Boy Advance sizzle reel sure to stir up memories of GBA owners from back in the day, showing the Game Boy Advance link cable,Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land,Yoshi’s Island: Super Mario Advance 3, and more. User TheUltiMarioFan reminisced on a collaboration between Nintendo and Minute Maid’s Hi-C juice-flavored drinks made, to promote the Game Boy Advance featuring loads ofdifferent Nintendo characterseach representing a different flavor of Hi-C. Twitter user RPGSite notes that while the Game Boy Advance released in Japan 20 years ago today, it didn’t come to the West until July 31, 2025.

Some fans had hoped that Nintendo might commemorate the system’s 20th anniversary byreleasing Game Boy Advance gameson the Nintendo Switch Online service, but as of right now, Nintendo has yet to add more than games from the NES and SNES. The Japanese video game company has certainly been celebrating quite a few anniversaries as of late, withSuper Mario’s 35th anniversary last year, along withThe Legend of Zelda’s 35th anniversary,Pokemon’s 25th anniversary,Donkey Kong’s 40th anniversary, andMetroid’s 35th anniversary all taking place this year.

Now, as fans celebrate one Nintendo system, they look forward to another, as many are eager to learn more of the highly-rumored Nintendo Switch console revision in the form of a Switch Pro. And while manyrumors point to a possible release date,it will be interesting to see where Nintendo decides to take the Switch in the future.
