Most games in this franchise are brawlers or action games of some sort. Some notable entries includeOne Piece: Pirate Warriorswhich was a spinoff of theDynasty Warriorsfranchise. There was alsoOne Piece: World Seekerin 2019 which was the last big game based on the franchise which was a bit likeThe Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

One Piece Odysseyis a rare turn-based RPG for the West. There have been RPGs like this before but only in Japan. As the first one in years, it feels a bit behind the times. The game could do with a few tweaks to make it more modern and these tips could help developers makeMonkey D. Luffy’slatest adventure better.

8Add The English Cast

This latest RPG is one of many anime games that doesn’t feature English voice acting. Bandai Namco can be inconsistent with their dubbing. For example,Dragon Ball: The Breakersgot the English anime cast to do the voices as an option but there isn’t an English track for One Piece Odyssey. It may be too late to wish for this now, but getting the English dub cast to record a new audio track for this game would be grand. That would presumably cost a lot of extra money post-launch but if sales are good, Bandai Namco may feel generous enough to patch in new voices. One of the better English examples from theanime is Zoro.

7Add Difficulties

RPGs can go one of two ways. Either they have a standard set of difficulties or they gave nothing at all. A turn-based RPG can be made easier by leveling up. Even the biggest RPGs, likeFinal Fantasy 7, did not have difficulty modes. One Piece Odysseythen may have wished to emulate the greats by not adding optional modes. The game overall is not that tough as long as players fight a moderate amount of battles. However, the hardcore players would assuredly love a more challenging mode, so it’s not always about accommodating the casual crowd with difficulty options.

6Pick Up Shiny Objects Automatically

Items can be acquired in one of several ways. They can be won in battle as is standardin most RPGs. They can be found in chests as well and items will even litter the ground with treasure. Grounded items look like shiny objects, signaling to players that there is treasure below.

Players have to input a command prompt to pick these lower-level items up. It’s not a huge hassle, but it would be nice if these shiny objects were picked up automatically instead. It will save a lot of time while exploring the world.

5Cut Battle Animations

Classic turn-based RPGs, especially ones from Japan, love to have flashy battle animations. This game is no different and the skills of the Straw Hat Pirates look great. However, they can be excessive, especially during boss battles which require their usage a lot. There are some turn-based RPGs that offer players ways to skip battle animations such as manyFire EmblemandPokemongames. One Piece Odysseywould benefit from adding this option to the menu.Usopp’s attacks arefunny but they can go on too long.

4Faster Battle Options

Another way the length of battles could be shortened is through faster optimal mechanics. There is a fast-forward button but it only has one speed. That is more than some RPGs, but others exceed expectations likeBravely Default 2. Players can boost the speed of battle by up to four times the normal amount in that game which would benefitOne Piece Odysseyas well. Another character with long battleanimations is Franky, so a bigger boost to fast-forward feature would be good.

3Remove The Tutorial Bar

The HUD is a bit obtrusive in the game because a big chunk of the right-hand screen is cluttered. The task at hand along with the control scheme is displayed here. Players can click a button to make the button layout go away but the quest marker will remain.

There is also no way to minimize the mini-map or to make it go away completely. An option to turn off these features would be appreciated in an update.

2Add A Photo Mode

Not every game needs a photo mode butOne Piece Odysseywould benefit from one. It’s not the most amazing-looking game on the market that pushes graphics unlike God of War Ragnarok but the bright colors help it stand out. That’s why it would be special to allow players to capture the beauty with a photo mode while exploring the world and while in battle. Also, some players might want to get somesnapshots of Namiand Nico Robin specifically. Players may also be pleased if the developers removed the motion blur from the game, or at least gave them that option in the menu. That way at least action-oriented screenshots wouldn’t turn out so blurry.

1Battle Changes

There are a couple more battle changes the game could use beyond the increase in speed. Subtitles cannot be turned off in battle which isn’t a huge deal but it could be rectified in an update. Autobattle functionality is always appreciated in an RPG, but there is no way to tweak these tactics in this game. A way to send orders to AI units specifically would help players plan more strategicallylike ordering Chopperto focus on healing while Zoro focuses on attacking. It doesn’t need to be as complex asFinal Fantasy 12’sGambit system but that’s always a good template for RPG developers to look back on.
