ThePokemonfranchise has produced hundreds of unique designs for their fictional creatures over its lengthy run. From the original 150 designs, released in the mid 1990s,Pokemonhas now seen 8 generations full of different Pokemon. As a tribute to one of the best known designs from the first generation, onePokemonfan recreated Bulbasaur but in spooky fashion.

Bulbasaur is registered as the first Pokemon in the Pokedex and is one of the three starters players can choose in thefirst generation ofPokemongames. Crocheting, the method used to create this new Bulbasaur, involves using a crochet hook to interlock strands of material in order to create textiles. This example is a home-made crochet design but with minor changes to fit a halloween theme.

This redesign of Bulbasaur was created by u/jtrxn and is just one example of their numerous creations. The crocheted Bulbasaur, referred to as a spooky version of the Pokemon, is instantly recognizable. The design departs from the original through a small pumpkin on the Pokemon’s back, a swap from an overall green aesthetic to a grey one, and a witch hat on Bulbasaur’s head. These alterations to the first ever Pokemon don’t hurt the original design and perfectly fit u/jtrxn’s goal. The orange eyes and grey skin brings Halloween right to mind for anyone viewing it.

This being a Halloween-themed Bulbasaur, it would likely remaina Grass type Pokemonbut would probably swap its traditional second label of Poison for Dark. Though crocheting can be tricky for those uninitiated, u/jtrxn has made a number of different creations along a similar vein. The great design and execution of this Bulbasaur are proof of that experience. But, even with that practice, this creation must have taken quite a lot of time to complete.

Bulbasaur’s new design here is brilliantly displayed in a form that isn’t too common for fan tributes. Even thoughthis Pokemon is quite popular, recreations through crocheting can be challenging. This tricky style demands a certain level of patience and materials. Those requirements may put creations like this out of reach for somePokemonfans.

But the lack of crochet creations helps posts such as this one from u/jtrxn stand out. Becausefusions and redesigns of Pokemonare typically in 2D, this creation definitely sticks out. Either way though, this spooky version of Bulbasaur is instantly recognizable and should get people ready for the upcoming season.
