While these function very much like standard PokeStops, they do have a chance of awarding a special item when spun. That item is the “?????? Coin,” a mysterious gold coin inPokemon GO, and this guide is here to collect the information that is currently known about it.
Pokemon GO: What Are ?????? Coins?
The new coins that can be obtained by spinning Gold PokeStops inPokemon GOare connected toGimmighoul, a Pokemon that is set to debut in the forthcomingPokemon ScarletandViolet. This Pokemon has two different forms, dubbed “Roaming Form” and “Chest Form,” and players can learn more about them in the video that is below. That video does not provide information about the specific function of the gold coins, though, and that is where some amount of speculation is required.

At the time of writing, there are several theories about the purpose of gold coins, one of which is that they will serve as evolution items for Gimmighoul. This theory is primarily supported by the fact that ?????? Coins appear alongside other evolution items, such asPoGO’s Sinnoh Stones, in the bag. Indeed, while this positioning could turn out to be arbitrary, players should not be too surprised if they ultimately find themselves using gold coins to initiate evolutions.
Another theory is that ?????? Coins will play a role in catching Gimmighoul, similar to how theMystery Box inPokemon GOfunctions. This does seem sensible, as there are undoubtedly some similarities between the reveal of Gimmighoul and the reveal of Meltan, which occurred in 2018. Notably, it is confirmed that players must linkScarletorViolettoPoGOin order to gain the ability to catch Gimmighoul (Roaming Form) in 2023, which means that gold coins cold be without function for quite some time if this theory is correct.
The final theory that is worth mentioning is that gold coins are to be used in a Special Research story that will focus around Gimmighoul. If there is to be such a Special Research, perhaps it will become available during an event that is set to take place on Sunday, November 27. Indeed, there is an unnamed event scheduled to occur between 11am and 5pm local time on that date, which is not long after therelease ofPokemonScarletandViolet, and that may be when ?????? Coins finally find their use.
