Summary

The DLC forPokemon Scarlet and Violetis broadening the games' cast of unique characters with several new additions coming in The Teal Mask and The Indigo Disk. Along with a variety of new mons coming in this DLC,Pokemon Scarlet and Violetplayers will get to meet strong trainers in the land of Kitakami and fellow students at Blueberry Academy. Among these characters are siblings Carmine and Kieran, who appear to play a prominent role in the story of the DLC, but Kieran in particular is reminiscent of another fan-favorite character from the series.

While not much is known about these two characters, it’s clear that Carmine is the strong-willed but protective big sister and Kieran is the shy and sensitive little brother. ThePokemonseries typically does a great job of showing a range of personalities with its characters, and Carmine and Kieran are a great example of this discrepancy. With a nature being described as quiet and gentle, Kieran sounds like he could have a similar personality to one of Gen 5’s major characters:Pokemon Black and White’s N.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet’s Kieran is Reminiscent of Pokemon Black and White’s N

N, whose full name is Natural Harmonia Gropius, is a very enigmatic character inPokemon Black and White. He often appears to challenge players to a battle so that he can, as he claims, hear the voice of the player’s Pokemon. He has a gentle kindness towards these creatures as he grew up as an orphan surrounded by monsters that had been mistreated by humans. The major twist of the game is that N had been raised byTeam Plasma’s Ghetsiswith the intent that he would some day become Team Plasma’s king, leading N to have a well-intentioned but warped view of the relationship between people and Pokemon.

While N is very compassionate towards Pokemon, he is very resentful of humans and their treatment of these creatures, which seems similar yet different to the characteristics of Kieran who appears to be gentle towards both. His sister Carmine is apparently more wary of people from other regions, but Kieran is said to be very curious about the player when he meets them for the first time. However, the mysterious aura and sensitive disposition of Kieran is eerily similar to that of N, but because not much is known aboutKieran’s role in the DLCforPokemon Scarlet and Violet, it’s hard to tell if his character arc will follow a similar trajectory as N’s.

Unlike N, who changes his team each time the player encounters him, Kieran seems to be sticking with thenew Applin evolution, Dipplin, as his main partner Pokemon. This would suggest that, while still compassionate towards these critters, Kieran doesn’t share N’s disdain for humans and has no qualms about capturing and training mons for battle. By the end ofPokemon Black and White, N is able to come to terms with the special relationship between humans and their partner Pokemon, seeing the error in his previous thinking, and it’s possible Kieran’s arc could serve a similar purpose in regard to changing the player’s perspective on certain events.

With speculation surroundingPokemon Black and Whiteremakes or aPokemon LegendsUnovagame heating up following several leaks and rumors, it would make sense that a character like Kieran would mirror Gen 5’s most iconic character. Interestingly, Kieran’s localized name for each language available in the game derives from the word for black currant or black gooseberry, perhaps further hinting at a connection to Gen 5’sPokemon Black and White. There seems to be a lot of parallels between thePokemon Scarlet and Violet DLCand the Gen 5 games, which is demonstrated by the ways in which Kieran is reminiscent of N.
