Aesthetics And Build Quality

Keep the gaming session running longer with PowerA Moga’s Play And Charge Mobile Gaming Clip!

The Moga Play & Charge Mobile Gaming Clip (referred from here out as the Moga Clip) features a similar appearance to other controller clips on the market today with a controller attachment base, a flexible arm, and finally a phone clip. The base of this new clip is much larger than what is found on competing offerings thanks to the inclusion of a built-in battery. Sadly none of the documentation made available states the capacity of the battery. Overall, it extends the height of the base unit by roughly an inch and houses a USB-C port, a power button, and an LED used to indicate the charging level. The flexible arm is positioned using two screws, giving players a number of different options for phone-to-controller placement.

Finally, the phone clip features four rubberized grips that hold the phone in place. The grip extends allowing phones up to 3.25 inches to fit without issue. The padded surfaces along the entire surface ensure that phones won’t be scratched or damaged from use. The overall build quality of the Moga Clip is solid with the base securely holding onto Xbox controllers and the flexible arm not having any worrisome give. The phone clip is the weakest part of the build as the extension arm is relatively thin and bends easily. That being said it holds phones in place well and the weight of a Google Pixel 6 Pro and a case has done little to make it lose grip.

Gameplay

Getting started with the Moga Clip for gaming on the go is a breeze. Any first-party Microsoft controller fits into the grip without issue and is held in place firmly thanks to the grip using the attachment rails built into the Xbox controller’s bottom expansion port. By utilizing this type of locking system, the clip is both easy to attach and remove as the need for it arises unlike with other controllers and gaming clips. None of the ports or buttons on the Xbox controller are blocked, giving players full access to sync up the controller to a phone without having to remove the grip or charge it when the need arises– well, as long as a play-and-charge kit is installed or an Elite Series 2 controller is in use.

With the Moga Clip’s built-in battery, players can either charge a phone or USB-C equipped Xbox controller with the included USB-C to USB-C cable. The cable is a perfect length to allow easy hookup without it getting intrusive during use. During this review period, it was able to charge the Google 6 Pro by around 50% while playing a game through Xbox Game Pass Cloud Streaming. While the clip is charging a device, the white LED will glow to indicate it is in use. While not in use, players can hold the power button and the LED will either turn solid white indicating the battery level is high, or flash to indicate a charge is needed. While charging, the LED will take an orange appearance and turn white when the charge is complete. A full charge only takes around 2 hours to achieve.

Diving into gameswith an Xbox Elite Series 2 Core Controller, the grip held in place while holding a Google 6 Pro without a single issue to be found. Testing various holding angles resulted in no signs of the clip losing grip on the controller or phone. So good news for any gamers who enjoy hanging upside down during play: the Moga Clip is ready to accommodate! The flex arm allowing for different phone placements has been great for finding the perfect positioning for comfort and weight distribution.

Whether playing mobile games, cloud streaming withXbox Game Pass, or playing games through emulation, the Moga Clip has been amazing at transforming the experience into one more in line with a console gamer’s expectations. Compatibility with the controller comes down to each individual app of course, but most things these days feature some level of compatibility, and for anything that doesn’t, mapper apps exist to let you best take advantage of a gamepad. Once again, when finished the controller can be quickly removed for use on a dedicated Xbox console or PC, and with a quick double tap of the sync button, the connection can be restored between console or phone for the ultimate quick swap!

What It Could Have Done Better

As far as a phone clip goes there is little to criticize about the Moga Play & Charge Mobile Gaming Clip. It holds an Xbox controller and phone in place well and allows bigger phones to function without issue. It also gives extra power to either device to extend gameplay sessions. While it would have been nice to see a bit more strength in the extension arm of the phone grip, this would have added additional bulk or weight that might make it more unwieldy to use. The only real complaint with the Moga Clip is that it doesn’t work with controllers using non-standard battery packs for external docks. EvenPowerA’s own Play and Charge Kitsare unsupported and have to be swapped out for something else if it is to be used with the clip. While not a deal-breaking problem to encounter, it is a bit annoying since many players are likely using a docking solution for controller power needs.

Conclusion

For heavy mobile players looking to get a bit more game time out of a session, the Moga Play & Charge Mobile Gaming Clip is a fantastic option! All first-party Xbox controllers are supported and held in place well along with phones up to 3.25 inches. Players can attach the clip and remove it quickly as the need arises, and charge either the phone or controller to extend theplay session. For the asking price of $30 it comes in higher than competing options but the added battery life more than justifies it. For any Xbox player looking to use the controller on a phone, this is a good place to start looking!
