Players of the Steam versions of theResident Evil 2andResident Evil 3remakes are reporting that they have lost access to some important features within the game. The big thing that fans noticed that ended up being removed was ray tracing, something that helped make gaming environments look incredibly realistic with its lighting. A lot ofCapcom games that have been released for current and next-gen systemshave been implementing this feature.

Many of these games that have added this feature have utilized its proprietary RE Engine. Last year, Capcom added this feature to the PC versions ofthreeResident Evilgames in a big “next-gen” update, which includedResident Evil 7: Biohazard,Resident Evil 2, andResident Evil 3. A new update was recently put out for these games, but what fans found was that this feature, among others, was removed.

One player on the Steam forums noted thatResident Evil 2was missing the ray tracing option, with others on Reddit also reporting the same thing, seeing thatResident Evil 3was also affected. As a result, many tried to report this issue to Steam and also voiced their grievances on Reddit. Another set of users also reported that the HDR in both games wasn’t working correctly following this update.

While the reason why is currently unknown, the most likely reason and dominating theory are tied toCapcom ending its support with legacy versions of certainResident Evilgames. More specifically, it wouldn’t be supporting builds ofResident Evil 2,3, and7that are using DirectX 11. It’s entirely possible that this was a mistake on Capcom’s part, and that the games might have accidentally downgraded from DX12 to a DX11 build during the patch, which doesn’t support features like ray tracing and 3D audio. The end of support for these legacy versions doesn’t officially come until the end of this year, so fans are wondering what happened. Capcom has also yet to put out an official statement regarding these ports.

For the time being, fans will need to wait until an official statement or update is put out by Capcom to see ifray tracing will be re-implemented. There is apparently an update that is scheduled for later that was spotted on SteamDB, though fans should take that with a grain of salt. Capcom has stated before with the dropped support of these versions ofResident Evil, there is no guarantee with the games being compatible or operable in the future.

Resident Evil 2andResident Evil 3are available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
