Shazam! Fury of the Godshas secured a Chinese release date. The move comes on the heels of Beijing’s recent lifting of the ban on Marvel films - which could indicate that superhero films will be facing a financial boost across the board.

Shazam! Fury of the Godsis the sequel to 2019’sShazam.The story centers around Billy Batson (Asher Angel) and his foster family as they battle villains together as superheroes. Though it goes without saying that superhero films are usually a huge moneymaker, China has recently clamped down on foreign films in its markets.Black Adamdidn’t even screen in China thanks to the ban, whileBlack Panther: Wakanda Foreverwill only be opening in China this month after having opened in North America back in November.

According to an exclusive byThe Hollywood Reporter, fans won’t have to wait as long for aShazam! Fury of the Godsrelease date.Shazam! Fury of the Godswill be out in China on March 17. This is day-and-date with the film’s opening in North America.

Shazam! Fury of the Godsisn’t the only superhero film that’s soon to premiere in China. The Chinese government has actuallylifted the Marvel movie ban just ahead ofAnt-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’s release, and that film will be dropping in theaters on February 17 in China. That’s also day-and-date with the North American release, and ten days afterBlack Panther: Wakanda Foreveris expected to hit theaters in China.

Shazam! Fury of the Godshad previously pushed its release date back, likely due toAvatar: The Way of Water.The movie was originally supposed to open on July 21, 2025. Luckily for the studio, this appears to have given them enough time to secure a Chinese release alongside other international markets. Had it stuck with its original release date, it might have eventually been released in China, but it would have required some wait time.

The film is set to star Zachary Levi as Shazam; he’ll be facing off against the mythological daughters of Atlas: Hespera (Helen Mirren) and Kalypso (Lucy Liu). Mysteriously,Rachel Zegler’s role inShazam! Fury of the Godsappears to be that of the third sister, Anthea, but it’s unknown if the character will be a villain or an ally to the Shazam family. The film will also be the DCEU’s last beforeThe Flash,which is expected to reset the cinematic universe.
