When it comes to things gamers look forward to whenever a new console generation arrives, the reveal of each console’s standard box art design might not rank as high as the reveal of their games orhardware features. Nevertheless, fans are currently excited for anything next-gen, and since the official designs for thePlayStation 5and Xbox Series X’s game boxes have yet to be revealed, players are now taking the opportunity to share some ideas of their own.
Recently, players saw an example of this with one fan’s sleek vision for theXbox Series X’s box art, and now another has offered their take on what the PS5’s packaging could look like. As shared by GermanStrands on Twitter, the design looks professional and believable enough that it could pass for an official product, even if it skews more towards the basic side.

Sporting rounded edges on the top and a slightly darker shade of blue than what is seen on the boxes for PS4 games, the mockup actually keeps thePS5banner off the cover art, incorporating it into the top edge of the case instead. This is much like how Xbox One game boxes are, and it only leaves room for the PS5 logo.
On the plus side, this minimalistic spin really cuts down on the clutter. Aside from the words “Only on PlayStation” in one upper corner and a logo of the PlayStation’s face buttons in the other, there’s not much PlayStation branding getting in the way of the art itself. These intriguing mockup covers forThe Last of Us Part 2and a hypothetical sequel toHorizon Zero DawncalledHorizon Eclipsemake a strong case for Sony taking a “less is more” approach with the official box design.
As it stands currently, Sony has offered no hint towards the aesthetic it’s planning for the PS5 brand beyond revealing theofficial PS5 logoearlier this month. While the familiar logo suggests the company may maintain a PS4-esque look for the PS5, it may still end up doing something completely different to make the next PlayStation, and its games boxes, stand out from its predecessor. With all rumors pointing towards an official PS5 reveal in February, fans should hopefully have a better idea soon.
While the look of the boxes that games come in might seem like an odd thing to focus on, especially in light of the continualdecline of physical game sales, it’s worth noting that game packaging is a key part of a brand’s aesthetic. More often than not, game boxes are the most prominent display of the brand at a retail outlet, making them what consumers look to the most to separate one console’s offering of games from the other. Therefore, it helps for the packaging to sport a look that highlights the brand as much as the games themselves.
