There are few fandoms as passionate asSkyrimplayers, for there is nothing this community won’t dabble in – even if it entails recreating a fictional narcotic called skooma by following the instructions from an officialElder Scrollscookbook.Skooma has had a long history withinThe Elder Scrollscommunity, and it has long been the subject of memes and jokes given its place in the lore as the universal illicit substance of Tamriel.
Between the Skooma Cat and the use of moon sugar as the main ingredient, this illegal drug has been heavily associated with the Khajiit of Elsweyr – though it was in truth developed and perfected by theDunmer of Morrowind. Ever since it was introduced in the thirdElder Scrollsgame, skooma has featured in every single installment after, with Bravil’s skooma den inOblivionbeing the most memorable and prominent example by far.

AnElder Scrollsfantried to recreate the infamous skooma drink following the official recipe fromThe Elder Scrollscookbook that was released in 2019. The results of this experiment remain inconclusive, as the skooma is still undergoing fermentation, but LiNawnt was kind enough to post a picture of their progress on the officialSkyrimsubreddit. At this point, people must surely be wondering what skooma actually tastes like, given that the lore states it is distilled from moon sugar and mixed with the herb Nightshade. The answer that the cookbook provides is strangely simple, yet makes plenty of sense: apricots, cardamom, and vanilla.
Skyrimplayers interested in making their own Skooma need but follow the recipe from the cookbook. First, they need to combine one cup of sugar with three and a half cups of boiling water in a heat-proof container, stirring until the sugar has dissolved. After pouring it into a glass bottle, its other ingredients come into play: two cups of vodka, ten dried and diced apricots, a pinch of cardamom, and a dash of vanilla extract. For the next three to four weeks, it should be kept somewhere dim, and the capped bottle should be occasionally stirred.
At the end of this infusion process,Elder Scrollsfans can expect to get their genuine Skooma cordial that probably tastes just as sweet as the real thing fromSkyrim– and likely gives a headache just as strong. For players interested in making other Tamrielicdishes fromThe Elder Scrollssuch as Sweet Rolls, they might consider getting their hands on the official cookbook, as Skooma famously pairs well with a Spiced Root Cake.
