As is the case with all of FromSoftware’s Soulsborne games, the lore ofElden Ringis deep, complex, and deliberately vague. There’s a lot about the game’s events that fans have yet to piece together, and much of the unparsed lore deals with Ranni the Witch, one of the game’s most central figures. Ranni struck out from her Empyrean siblings, orchestrating a plot to steal the rune of death, thereby setting the plot ofElden Ringin motion. However, unlike Godrick, Radhan, Margott, and Malenia, she is without a great rune, though some investigative players feel as if they’ve finally put together why that is.Please note that this article will have MAJOR SPOILERS forElden Ring.
Those who’ve followedRanni’s questline through to completionwill know that she is very closely associated with the moon and outer spheres far beyond The Lands Between. Her ending brings about a new age of stars and seems to suggest that the moon itself is some kind of elder being. However, her ties to the moon maybe even deeper; as suggested by one establishedElden RingYouTuber, it could be that Ranni somehow hid her great rune there.

While Ranni appearing on the moon may seem like a stretch, she had a hand in killing an ostensibly immortal being and destroyed her physical form in the process, living on in the body of a doll. With that in mind, it’s hard to delineate which theories might be too out-there to make sense, and, as was the case withthe torrent of fakeElden Ringlore fans inventedin the years between the game’s announcement and its release, the game’s community can cook up some pretty outlandish ideas.
This theory was covered byprominent soulsborne YouTuber VaatiVidyawhose easily-digestible lore videos make for an excellent starting point forElden Ringnewcomers. In a video published on June 19, 2025 titled “10 Fascinating Lore Discoveries In Elden Ring,” the YouTuber points out that Sir Gideon Ofnir remarks that Ranni cast aside her great rune and that its whereabouts are unknown. He then points to a small snippet from a pre-release trailer which seems to show some kind of marking on The Lands Between’s soul heavenly body.
It’s worth noting that, whilegreat runes are an incredibly valuable asset inElden Ring, players must only technically claim two of the seven in order to becomeElden Lord. Yet, even when all seven runes are assembled, they don’t appear to form the full Elden Ring. It could be that Ranni’s rune, as well as a suite of hitherto unmentioned runes, will play a role in a potentialElden RingDLC release.
