The first ofSonic Frontiers' free updates might have leaked future playable characters. Back in 2021,Sonic Frontierswas formally revealed at The Game Awards, and it was quick to call attention as it made itself known as the first open-zoneSonicgame. Now, that title hasgreatly surpassed Sega’s sales goals, and is set to get expansive DLC throughout 2023.On the official DLC roadmap, the third planned update generated a fair deal of buzz when the content was announced. After years of games where only Sonic the Hedgehog has been prominently playable,Sonic Frontierswas revealed to be getting new playable characterssometime in late 2023. However, that was all fans were given, as it didn’t specify exactly who would be playable, or when players could expect them to be available. However, now that the Sights, Sounds, and Speed update forSonic Frontiershas released, new files were found next to Sonic’s that suggest that the groundwork for the last DLC pack may already be set in stone.RELATED:Roblox Game Sonic Speed Simulator Adds Anticipated Character In Latest UpdateShared on Twitter bySonicfan site SoaH City, the new DLC forSonic Frontiersadded “Amy_common,” “Knuckles_common,” and “Tails_common” files in the playercommon files. These “common” files are the parameters for details of how these characters should operate. The “player_common” file for Sonic, for instance, is where fans can find his physics, Cyloop color settings, and other items that say exactly how he interacts with things in the game.
If these files are anything to go by, then fans can expect to play as Knuckles, Tails, and Amy inSonic Frontiersby the time the game turns a year old. Amy’s inclusion is rather interesting, as she’s also being made playable in theupcomingSonic Origins Plusthat was announcedrecently. It’s understandable as to why Sega seems to be putting an emphasis on the fan-favorite pink hedgehog asSonic CDturns 30 years old this year.CDwas the game that introduced both her and Metal Sonic for the first time.
While it seems like no one has been able to look at these files closely yet to really see what’s inside them, fans who wish to experience these characters for themselves on release should steer clear of any futureSonic Frontiersmods for the time being. There’s a very strong chance that these settings will be applied to Sonic to see exactly how these characters work through mods, which may spoil their inclusion and play style.
However, there’s also a chance that these files may serve completely different purposes. For further confirmation, players should keep an eye out for an announcement from Sega itself in the months to come.
Sonic Frontiersis available for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
