Stormgate’s Announcement
Summer Game Fest’s live kick-off showwas full of great game announcements. For any fans fearing a dry summer when it came to reveals and gaming news thanks to E3’s cancellation, the showcase demonstrated that there is still plenty for players to enjoy, with even more events on the horizon. One of the reveals during the show was the newest free-to-play RTSStormgatefrom ex-Blizzard devs, which will be an action-packed tale set on a post-apocalyptic Earth where humanity must face off against some fearsome alien invaders.
The game features an alternate-history version of the player’s own world and the story takes place far in the future after humanity has almost faced extinction. Humans were brought to the brink by aliens called the Infernal Host – a playable race of demonic creatures determined to make Earth their new home, even if it means eradicating its current inhabitants.Stormgateaims to create an expanding in-game universewith a story that is conveyed through ongoing campaign missions that constantly adapt and update the world and its narrative. Players can choose to experience these solo, or cooperatively with friends as they wage wide-scale war.

Similarities To Other Titles
Stormgate’s developer hasn’t shied away from the RTS legacy that many of its team has already been a part of, but Frost Giant Studios has also been keen to point out that its upcoming title represents the next step in the genre. While still leaning on the example of previous games likeStarCraft,Stormgateis looking to create its own versionof established genre tropes and trends.Stormgateis still in development, and the details of how it will distinguish itself from other games in the genre are mostly still yet to be revealed. However, the early signs and stated aspirations ofStormgatedo show promise.
There will be continued support for the title, not just with its ongoing campaign-led story, but with new maps, modes, and other features to ensure thatStormgateis continually improving. The Summer Game Fest reveal trailer featured a futuristic mech fighting off a decidedly demonic winged enemy, which if nothing else definitelylooks likeStarcraftmeetsDiablo. With its sci-fi sensibilities andStarCraft’s RTS gameplay joining demonic enemies and the collision of two worlds,Stormgatecould be a great mix of the fan-favorite franchises while still offering players something new and unique.
Stormgateis currently in development for PC, with plans for Beta Testing to begin early 2023.
