It’s the dawn of the next generation of video game hardware and the speculation is at an all time high. Despite Sony’srecent debut showcase of the PlayStation 5, the lack of one key piece of information has the internet playing a guessing game.
Usually at a console reveal, the respective piece of hardware is shown on stage so size isn’t usually up for debate. With Sony opting for a video presentation instead of a live event, thePlayStation 5’s size is cause for debate.

The main measure that people are using to distinguish the size of what early rumors called a “fat” console is through the disc drive. During the presentation, Sony announced that two options are available for the PlayStation 5: a digital only version and one that still takes physical media. It is the latter that has given fans a clearer idea just how “fat” this thing is going to get. By most estimates, the PlayStation 5 is taller than the launch PlayStation 3.
Compared to its direct competition, the Xbox Series X, the PlayStation 5 still towers over Microsoft’s upcoming hardware. The Xbox Series X stands at 151mm x 151mm x 301mm andbased on our metrics of fridge and banana comparisons, it’s still takes up a sizable space.
While the question of size has been a key factor following the presentation, the more pertinent one is that of price. Sony Interactive Entertainment’s president Jim Ryan spoketo the BBC regarding a price point during this uncertain time. While Ryan gave no indication of price, he stated that with current economic fears that “this will sharpen our need to ensure that we focus on getting the value equation right.” Beyond those two discussions that have swept across the internet, the other is when the PlayStation 5 will actually launch. Back in April, a reportindicated that the PS5 launch may be in limited supply.
While there are many lingering question about the machine itself, Sony diddeliver on the games with a diverse showcase. The presentation featured games from all genres and sizes from the long rumored reveal of aDemon’s Soulsremake, aHorizonsequel, the next entry in theHitmanreboot series and a wonderful display of indies.
The coming months are going to ramp up with the next generation information. From game reveals, launch dates and more importantly, price points.
The PlayStation 5 is expected to release holiday season 2020.
