The Witcherfranchise’s voice actor for Geralt has voiced his opinion on the subject of choosing either Yennefer or Triss. There’s rarely so controversial a decision in a video game like choosing between romantic partners andThe Witcher 3’s choice between Yennefer and Triss is an especially egregious example. These are characters thatThe Witcherplayers have grown familiar with across a trio of games, never mind the books. Yet for some, like Geralt’s voice actor, the choice is all too easy.
Romance has been a part ofThe Witcherfranchise since it began. In the first two games ofThe Witcher, Geralt isn’t even given a choice, per se. He’s allowed to make multiple choices throughout each game, as he’s hardly monogamous. InThe Witcher 3, however, romance is framed with some finality. The player is forced to choose one or neither.Choosing either Triss or Yenneferleads to an ending specific to that romance. Trying to romance both women will result in an ending with neither. As such, despite Geralt’s dalliances, the decision between Triss and Yennefer is considered one of the most important choices of the series.

Few likely understand the importance of this choice likeGeralt’s English voice actor Doug Cockle. He’s been Geralt’s voice actor since 2007, voicing him not only in the three main series releases but also across DLC, the A Night to Remember cinematic, and even the Gwent spin-off game. He knows the stories of Triss and Yennefer, and Geralt’s relationship with both. So when Cockle says in an interview with Xbox On that he prefers Triss, that means something.
In the interview, Cockle is asked if he’smore of a Yen fan, to which Cockle says out of character, “Me, personally? No. I like both of them, they’re both just amazing women.” He then explains that if it was him in-game, Doug Cockle and not Geralt, he’d “probably gravitate towards Triss.”
It makes a lot of sense that Cockle would choose Triss. After all, Triss is prominently featured and romance-able in all threeThe Witchergames. Yennefer, on the other hand, is absent fromThe Witcherand only appears in flashbacks inThe Witcher 2.Yennefer is an incredible character inThe Witcher 3, but she doesn’t have the same rapport that Triss has with those who playedThe WitcherandThe Witcher 2. Cockle would assumedly have that much closer of a tie to Triss.
Just because Cockle says Triss means the most to him as a romance-able character inThe Witcherseries doesn’t make it any more or less of a definitive choice. InThe Witcherbooks, for example,Triss is little more than a supporting characterwhile Yennefer is written as the only true match for Geralt. Every fan ofThe Witcherhas their own experience with each woman and can only make that choice on their own.
The Witcher 3is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
