What is Sazae-san?
Sazae-sanis a popular Japanese comic strip and animated TV series created by Machiko Hasegawa. It first appeared as a comic strip in 1946 and was later adapted into a radio program in the 1950s. In 1969, it was turned into an anime television series, which quickly became one of themost beloved programsin Japan. The story revolves around the daily life of the Isono family, primarily focusing on the titular character, Sazae-san, and her interactions with her husband, son, parents, siblings, and neighbors. The episodes are typically slice-of-life vignettes, highlighting the humorous and sometimes touching moments of the character’s everyday lives.
Sazae-sanis unique in that it portrays the life of a strong, independent woman (Sazae herself) who often breaks the traditional norms of Japanese society (which is especially noteworthy when you take into account the context of the time it was created and the time period in which the show still takes place). Despite how American publications seem amazed at how many episodes there are ofThe Simpsons, the reality is thatSuzae-sandwarfsThe Simpsonsby thousands of episodes. As of this writing,The Simpsonshas been running for 34 seasons and contains 750 episodes, one movie, and several theatrical (and Disney+) exclusive shorts. This is an impressive number no matter how you slice it, so don’t think the point of this article is to shame the family from Springfield.
That said, it pales in comparison toSazae-san, which (as of this writing) has a whopping 8,540 episodes! Heck, for all we know, this series might have passed 9,000 episodes by the time you read this. One of the reasons for the sheer amount of content forSuzae-sanis because the series premiered in 1969 and has pretty much aired new episodes non-stop on a weekly basis since then (with exceptions here and there whennational tragedieswould prevent the airing of new episodes).
Interestingly, despite the immense amount of content, the series has never been released outside of Japan or even on home video formats at the request of the manga creator’s wishes (who was also against merchandising of the series).
