Summary
A cool video online has shown footage ofGrand Theft Auto 5running on the Nintendo Switch, with surprising results. While Rockstar Games releasedGrand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - The Definitive Editionfor Nintendo Switchin recent years, its flagship titleGrand Theft Auto 5never made it onto the platform despite huge sales everywhere else.
Despite the game approaching its tenth birthday in the coming months,Grand Theft Auto5’s enduring popularity continues to be massively impressive. Recently, it was revealed in a Take-Two financial report thatGrand Theft Auto 5has sold over 180 million unitsto date, making it one of the best-selling games ever made. YouTuber Geekerwan released the footage in a video where they turn the Nintendo Switch into a Steam Deck by forcing it to run the Linux operating system. This allows them to then run other PC games, withGrand Theft Auto 5particularly featured. The results aren’t pretty. The console struggles massively to runGrand Theft Auto 5, with the CPU unable to handle the game’s open world. They try it at different graphics settings, but it makes little difference. The majority of the footage shows it hovering at around 6 to 8 frames per second, rendering it essentially unplayable. It’s possible that an official version of the game that was optimized for the Switch would run have better luck, however.
As well asGrand Theft Auto 5, Geekerwan does also check out the performance of other games not currently on Nintendo Switch such asDevil May Cry 5andGod of War. The results are unfortunately similar, with frame rates never hitting a playable level, even at lower settings. While some of thebest open-world games of all timeare available on Nintendo Switch, it’s interesting to see it struggle to handle a title that was first released on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
The performance ofGrand Theft Auto 5on Nintendo Switch could have some potential implications about the possibility ofGrand Theft Auto 6coming to the platform. Although the game has been confirmed to be in development, the platforms that it’s planned for haven’t yet been confirmed by Rockstar Games. However, if it’s struggling to run a decade-old title already, there’s every chance the developer decides to skip the console entirely for the sequel. It should be noted that this technically being an emulated version ofGrand Theft Auto 5would negatively impact performance, andGrand Theft Auto 6on Switch would be optimized specifically for the platform. With rumors suggesting thatGrand Theft Auto 6could arrive as early as 2024, gamers might not have long to wait to see if it comes to the platform.
Grand Theft Auto 5is available now for PC, PS3, PS4, PS5, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
