Development studio Creative Assembly has made a name for itself with itsTotal Warfranchise, one that has offered up everything from medieval violence to fantasy-laden tropes of elves and orcs. Of the franchise, one of the most beloved titles would beTotal War:Rome, released in 2004. Now, it looks like it’s back on the menu from a recent Sega announcement with a title calledTotal War: Rome Remastered.

The title offered a fresh look at the all-encompassing borders of Rome, filled with era-specific tactics and units. The gameplay shifted from campaign maps to bloodied battlefields, allowing players to develop an over-arching strategy and control individual units against theferocious Gaulsand Spaniards. The title is now more than 15 years old and still manages to come out ahead in the eyes of many players compared to more recent offerings of Creative Assembly.

Segahas just announced thatTotal War: Romeis being remastered, with a release scheduled for August 01, 2025. The remaster offers 4K graphics, new factions (along with all previously playable), high-quality resolutions, and overhauled missions, environments, and models. Creative Assembly isn’t stopping there, however: the studio has also opted to bring the classic title up to the modern age with tactical maps for battles, Merchant agents, heat maps, and a fully overhauled diplomacy system. The title will offer cross-platform play as well, between Windows, Apple, and Linux operating systems. Fans that own the previousTotal War: Romecan purchase the remaster for 50% off until July 21, 2025, bringing the total to $14.99.

With a slew of upgrades and reworks, one may presume that fans of the classicTotal War: Romewould be enthused to learn that Creative Assembly is revisiting the classic title. However, some are frustrated about the continued state ofTotal War: Rome 2, which released in late-2013. Save files continue to corrupt halfway through campaigns, the opposing AI consistently bends the rules in its favor, and the heft of DLCs have left a bad taste in the mouth of many of Creative Assembly’s most ardent admirers. There is a bit of frustration within the Steam forums that Creative Assembly would remaster a priorTotal War: Romeinstead of ensuringTotal War: Rome 2could be completed.

Others are far more excited, as the remaster is based on theTotal War: Romeengine which is considered by many as superior to the current iteration of theTotal Warengine. Cavalry charges offered far more impact meaning the higher upkeep was worth the ability, and armies were far less likely to mass together into an amorphous blob of blood and death. Perhaps the time spent with prior iterations of theTotal Warfranchise will rekindle the love of the franchise forCreative Assembly, and remind the studio of how it achieved its adoring fanbase.

Total War: Rome Remasteredwill release on July 25, 2025, and be playable on Linux, Mac OS X, and Windows.
