The Scholar - Archetype Overview

The Tremere Scholar is a powerful Blood Mage with the ability to harm foes and heal alliesvia their Blood Lance Power while boasting tremendous movement capabilities via the Levitation Power. This makes them a boon to team play while remaining just as dangerous in solo play.

The Scholar Archetype Power, Blood Lance, allows the Scholar to ready and fire a spear of blood. This serves as a long-range weapon that can deal tons of damage but requires players to aim precisely if they hope to land the attack. It can also be fired at an ally to heal them, allowing the Scholar to play a supporting role in team gameplay. When it strikes a foe, it restores the Scholar’s Health and Levitation Meter, and targets downed with the Blood Lance will immediately explode. The Blood Lance also pierces through targets, allowing players to strike multiple foes, or even heal allies and harm foes with a single shot.

The Tremere Clan Power, Levitation, allows them to freely fly until their levitation bar is emptied (It appears to the right of the targeting reticule while in use or recharging). This means that players using this archetype can approach enemies or evade threats in unexpected ways and from otherwise impossible directions, and this skill does not prevent the use of weapons, items, or Blood Lance while active. It can be toggled on and off to avoid wasting the whole meter, allowing players to ration their use of it for more effective and efficient use of flight.

Finally, the Scholar has the versatile Passive Power: Vital Knowledge, which causes enemies damaged by them to become revealed through walls and other obstacles. In team play this is shared with the Scholar’s allies, and this skill makes the Scholar fantastic at tracking wounded targets and making it more difficult for foes to escape.

When choosing an Archetype Perk to use with the Scholar Archetype, there are several excellent options. Both Knight and Physician offer improved survivability by allowing the Scholar to start with armor and create blood bags when feeding, respectively. These can both improve survivability when playing solo. Another excellent choice is Melancholic, allowing the Scholar to start with 2 points of Melancholic Resonance, reducing the cooldown time of Levitation and allowing them to fly more freely as a result. Phlegmatic is also an excellent pick here, since starting with 2 points of Phlegmatic Resonance allows the Scholar to use their Blood Lance more often, supplying much-needed healing and damage. Marshal is another solid pick when playing solo, doubling resonance gains and allowing the Scholar to power up more quickly during the match, but unfortunately, also doubling the length of any Bloodhunts they trigger. Not a problem if players make sure to uphold the Masquerade, of course.

Of the aforementioned Perks, the two most highly recommended would be Marshal and Phlegmatic. Marshal can be very powerful for players able to work around the Bloodhunt boosting drawback, while Phlegmatic is a safer option that still provides a ton of initial power to the Scholar at the start of a match.

The Scholar Performs best when working at mid-long range, though their built-in healing from Blood Lance can allow them to survive longer at close range than some other archetypes. This means that weapons like the Assault Rifle, Marksman Rifle, and Crossbow can all be very effective for them. The Scourge Blades and Katana can also be very effective for players who pick up some Choleric Resonance and are confident in their ability to land Blood Lances for healing when necessary in melee, with the Katana in particular providing a useful survivability boost in the form of its block. The Sniper Rifle can be useful, though it is difficult to land Blood Lance at extreme ranges, and the 9-Barrel can be an excellent general purpose weapon.

When playing the Scholar, players should aim for Phlegmatic Resonance as their top priority, closely followed by Melancholic Resonance. The former allows them to make use of Blood Lance more frequently, greatly enhancing their damage and support capabilities, while the latter allows them to recharge Levitation faster to take full advantage of the incredible range of movement it offers.
