Fans ofThe Lord of the Ringsget really invested in the characters, particularly those main ones who were a part of the Fellowship of the Ring. These characters are rich enough that a lot of people are still interested in where their journeys take them even after they have completed their main goal within the story. One particular fan-favorite character is Legolas, the Elf who accompanies Frodo and the Fellowship on their journey. The movie adaptations (and therefore Orlando Bloom’s portrayal of the character) likely helped to boost his popularity, but Legolas is well-known amongst those who count themselves fans of Tolkien.

Legolas is an integral part of the Fellowship withhis Elven senses and sharpshooter abilities, but he also had his own life both before and after his involvement in the War of the Ring. As he was technically a royal, he was important to the fabric of Middle-earth as a whole, and certainly to the characters withinThe Lord of the Rings. But where does Legolas eventually end up, and how did he spend the rest of his days after he was finished adventuring with the Fellowship and fighting in the war?

Where Was Legolas At The End Of The Story?

When the events ofThe Return of the Kingdrew to a close, Legolas was with the Fellowship (sans Sam and Frodo) at the Battle of the Black Gates, the final confrontation against Sauron’s forces at the end of the war. After Sauron’s defeat, Legolas stayed in Minas Tirith to be there forAragorn’s coronationwhere he was crowned King of Gondor, as well as his marriage to Arwen. This was seemingly the last place (at least, the last recorded place) where the Fellowship were all together again, before they went their separate ways to live out the rest of their lives and have their own adventures.

What Happened to Legolas After The War of the One Ring?

Post-war, Legolas seemingly wasn’t entirely ready to leave the Fellowship behind, ashe and Gimli went off on an adventure of their own. The pair traveled to Helm’s Deep, where Gimli showed off the Glittering Caves to Legolas. Gimli also decided to start a new colony of Dwarves there, where all of the Dwarves left homeless by the war could build a kingdom. Legolas helped him start up this new home and restored the caves to their former glory. In exchange for this help, Gimli in turn agreed to go with Legolas into Fangorn Forest, where Legolas essentially gave him a tour of the ancient woods.

Gimli and Legolas stayed together for quite a while before eventually parting ways and heading back to their respective homes. Legolas went to Ithilienwith some of his people, where he helped to restore some of the woodlands that had been ravaged by the war. He also helped rebuild the Woodland Realm as a whole, as it was his home. Some of the Woodland Elves also traveled to Minas Tirith to help them rebuild there, as it had been hit even harder than they had. A lot of the post-war times in Middle-earth were focused on this rebuilding, since Sauron’s reach had been extended over the land for so long, and his dark forces had torn apart the land in so many places.

Did Legolas Lose his Immortality?

Many of Middle-earth’s Elves left for the Undying Lands after the war, but not all of them departed immediately. There was a large portion of them that were content to stay in Middle-earth for as long as they could (such as Legolas or his father Thranduil), especially now that the land was relatively peaceful. Legolas stuck around for another 120 years before Aragorn died, which was when he finally decided that his own time in Middle-earth might be up as well. He built his own ship and, in a pretty unprecedented honor, invited Gimli to accompany him to the Undying Lands. No Dwarf had ever been allowed to travel to the West before, but Gimli’s bond with Legolas was strong, and he also said that he wanted tosee Galadriel’s beauty one last time. The friends sailed away towards the Undying Lands together, never seen in Middle-earth again.
