Summary
Season 7 ofOverwatch 2has been underway for a few weeks now, and though Blizzard introduced new content and patch notes for the season, the game has not been fulfilling for everyone. While members of all three roles have expressed opinions about the state ofOverwatch 2, the belief that playing tank this season is not satisfying appears to be a dominant perspective. The reasons for this are vast, but it seems to come down to two key factors.
Thankfully, it seems that Blizzard is aware of the issue at hand. Game Director Aaron Keller is quite active on Twitter and typically uses this platform to address issues with the game. Unfortunately, in spite of this progress, issues such as thedelay of the Roadhog reworkare contributing to the misfortune of playing tanks right now.

People Aren’t Queuing for Tank in Overwatch 2 Season 7
Players have been expressing distaste for the tank role ever sinceOverwatch 2launched in October of last year. Some recently cite that it feels like they must play meta heroes like Sigma and Orisa to survive when some would prefer to play characters with better movement like Doomfist or Wrecking Ball. Interestingly, the Top 500 leaderboards are filled with Grandmaster players for the support and damage roles, but the tank role has several Master players. This strongly indicates that fewer people are queuing up to play tank this season.
Tanks Face Too Much Pressure in 5v5
A large reason for the complaints originated from the fact that Blizzard opted to shift from the 6v6 format to 5v5. Due to this, several tank players in the hero-shooter have expressed that they feel they need to depend on their team more than they would like.
In 6v6,tanks like Roadhogand Winston had more room to off-angle while the second tank protected their back line. Making plays with a smaller team can easily turn into feeding the enemy team if a tank commits further than it should have, or they are constantly counter-swapped. As such, it seems that most people blame the tank for a loss, especially if the game ends quickly. Being constantly labeled as responsible for defeats may be a major factor for why less people want to queue for the role.

Overwatch 2’s Supports Are Too Influential
The past few seasons have seen support players becoming more dominant due to their passive self-regeneration, damage statistics, CC abilities, andimmortality such as Baptiste’s Immortality Fieldand Kiriko’s Protection Suzu. Some tanks have expressed that even after trying to bait out abilities like Ana’s Biotic Grenade or Bastion’s Assault form, it often feels like they can’t do much to change a fight.
However, with the Mid-Season patch releasing today, there is hope. Support characters such as Ana, Baptiste, Zenyatta, and Kiriko have all reserved nerfs to their kits which may help the overall state of the game. In response to the October 31 patch notes, notableOverwatch 2Twitch streamerFlats tweeted “We are so back.” Whether this patch can actually make the tank experience better for the community at large in the end is still to be determined.
Overwatch 2is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
