Zack Snyder is moving from superheroes and zombies to the depths of space for his next project. Now, Snyder is already comparing his upcoming epic,Rebel Moon, to his ownMan of Steel.

Delving deeper into his upcoming sci-fi epic forNetflix, Snyder noted that there will be elements very reminiscent ofhis work on the DCEU’sfirst entry,Man of Steel. Released in 2013,Man of Steeloffered a modernized and more serious take on Superman, opening with the destruction of Krypton.

“The beginning of Man of Steel has pretty big science fiction elements in it, right? Krypton,” Snyder adds during an interview with Post-Credit Podcast. “That’s kind of what we’re doing in Rebel Moon, but on the biggest steroids that I can give it. Frankly, what I’m really interested [in] with this movie is creating a romantic sci-fi film on a scale that is frankly as big as you can make the movie.“The opening ofMan of Steelspent roughly 25 minutes depicting the destruction of Krypton, which featured some very thrilling sequences that showcased everything from Superman’s home planet’s advanced, galactic technology to the large-scale sets. If Snyder is aiming to deliver one of the biggest films to date with his next project, then fans can gear up for one epic film with plenty of eye-popping visuals.

Netflix’sRebel Moon, an idea that Snyder shared stemmed fromStar Wars, will center on a young woman who is on a mission to gather up a group of warriors from other planets to take down a ruthless tyrant. “This is me growing up as an Akira Kurosawa fan, a Star Wars fan,” Snyder added about the film. “It’s my love of sci-fi and a giant adventure. My hope is that this also becomes a massive IP and a universe that can be built out.”

It’ll be interesting to see how Snyder explores his universe and how that will compare to recent epics such asDunethat spend a majority of its runtime through world-building. Snyder will no doubt create something wholly original and exciting, as he is no stranger to helming epic blockbusters (if films like300andWatchmenare any indication). After the release of his hit four-hour version ofJustice League, which corrected many of themistakes of Joss Whedon’s disastrous 2017 version, Snyder has also been gradually building his successful zombie/heistArmy of the Deadfranchise for Netflix. The prequel,Army of Thieves(which Snyder is not directing but will receive story credit), is already garnering much acclaim. The film will be followed by the animated prequel,Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas, and then a planned sequel already titledPlanet of the Dead.

Rebel Moonwill see Snyder collaborating with many of his past colleagues. He is co-writing the script withArmy of the Dead’sShay Hatten and300’s Kurt Johnstad. Snyder will produce the film with his wife and creative partner Deborah Snyder via the duo’s Stone Quarry.Rebel Moonalso reunites Snyder with Netflix’s Scott Stuber, who oversawDawn of the Deadwhen he was a former vice chairman at Universal.

Rebel Moonis expected to begin its production early in 2022, although no release date has been confirmed byNetflix.
