Summary

Death can come from nowhere inThe Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, as one player found out when messing around with explosive barrels led to an unexpected yet unsurprisingly fatal outcome.Tears of the Kingdomis a game with several systems working together to make Hyrule feel more alive than ever before, and while players are encouraged to test these systems and push them to the limit, sometimes doing so can backfire spectacularly.

One of the greatest strengths of Tears of the Kingdom lies in how malleable its gameplay can be with a little creative thinking. Beyond the unique weapons, vehicles, andmachines players can create using Ultrahand, Fuse, and Recall, the depth of the game’s physics engine means it’s possible for players to interact with the game’s items and other objects in surprising ways. However, that dynamism also means items and objects might not always behave like players expect, which can especially prove disastrous when said objects can blow up in their face.

On Reddit, user theSoulsilver started up a discussion inviting players to share thebest embarrassing deaths they’ve had inTears of the Kingdom, and got things rolling with a clip of their own from early on in their adventure. Having just landed in Hyrule Field after leaving the Great Sky Island tutorial area, theSoulsilver comes upon two bomb barrels next to a boulder. Merging one with their club using Fuse, they then throw the makeshift grenade and watch it explode from a safe distance. That’s when, in an unforeseen twist, the now-burning club comes flying back towards the player and ignites the other barrel, resulting in an instant fiery death for Link and a memorable Game Over screen for theSoulsilver.

Aside from being a decent PSA about the dangers of bomb barrels, this comedic end is one of countless hilarious demises players have suffered thanks to Tears of the Kingdom’s unpredictable open-world. Between the game’s physics, the occasional bugs, and players just goofing up, most players have seen their Link die in less than dignified fashion at least once, whether it be due to a glitchy trampoline ortrying to dive into the Depths next to a falling object.

Not only isThe Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdomone of the most popular games of the past year, it’s also one of the biggest. Its version of Hyrule is so vast and deep thatplayers can easily sink hundreds of hoursinto exploring it all. Which means it’s only a matter of time before someone else manages to die an unexpected death, regardless of whether or not explosions are involved.
